From the ice storm today, took me 5 hr to clear the drive way, stairs and walks, the end of the driveway was a block of packed ice from the plow.

the flag pole snapped under the weight of the ice

The pines flex down

The oak resits

ice fog

frozen

poor mark viii, its ice shell protecting from the falling branches

This is what i woke up to this morning, good thing it did not fall on my head last evening when i was clearing the driveway. :willy:

The trees look like they are covered in crystal, typically the ice will melt off in the sun but the temp is in the teens now and low 20s

Large branch just missed the Lincoln

I had to call all around this morning for ice melt, it is in very short supply, all the area Lowes and HD are out and may not get any back in stock. I lucked out at the local Ace, they just got a few pallets in this morning. 5 bag limit

The Precious

One local hardware had a few 9# calcium chloride shakers left, good for the steps when the ice melts off the roof, then re freezes on the steps.

Looks like a nice piano, Eric. But just a photo isn't going to cut it. We have a rule around here that music requires video. :D Have you had it tuned yet? Also feel free to post the brand/model/serial here, and we'll all do some googling. I've tried looking up pianos before. Some brands are much better documented than others..
Got some one coming out next week to give it a tune. Took some pictures as well, Says manufactured in 1905.... but who knows if that's right.

I'd guess that the date is correct. The design definitely matches the "Circa 1900" image from here: http://antiquepianoshop.com/identify-instrument/ I noticed somewhere else, there you could e-mail the staff at antiquepianoshop.com for more detailed information. I'd guess they have access to a database or reference, but have opted not to place it on-line..

A quick craigslist search of "free piano" will tell you all that you need to know. :)

This actually reminded me of an interview I heard with Neko Case a while back. Skip to about 2:50 for the bit where she goes searching for free pianos..

I could have sworn that when I heard it before, there was a reference to the un-tuneable ones were "put out to pasture.." literally. Perhaps that was somewhere else.

Not really when you look at today's economy...... look at the selling price (& bought for price) of our "antique" Mark VIII's.....

Funny you mentioned that :).

It was free on the condition I had to pick it up. The lady bought it with the house she owned and wanted to donate it to a school or something but all the places required her to pay for a piano moving company. So in turn I got a "free" piano for a $20 uhall rental, $20 in gas & $40 in moving dollys and blankets. Plus I had to buy my father in-laws love with a few cheese burgers for helping me.

Allot of work went into this one but I can't lie and say it wouldn't be fun to burn. :D But to my inner pyromaniac, I will not be destroying this.

A interesting little fact, almost every individual piece of furniture in our living room is at least 100+ years old....Including our Yellow Lab:)

I think those pencil marks were made by the piano tuner.
My Grinnell Pianola player piano has a few different pencil marks, the oldest appears to be 1921.

This is another one of my projects I've been working on over the years, I've had it working before, connected to 2 vacuum cleaners. I've recently pulled the mechanism out as I need to fix a few broken hammers. I hope to get them fixed and the mechanism working again using the pump pedals. :)

Our piano is pretty old and essentially worthless. There is a board inside it that is broken. The tuner said it would cost much more than it is worth to repair it. We can still play it, it just can't hold a proper tune. A piano is like any other antique furniture. Most old ones are not worth much, but there are obviously the gems that are worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. Like mike posted, you can always get a free piano on craigslist.

Good thing we got the call in the morning that the schools are closed, with ice in the trees and the gusting wind no way i am going out there now and getting hit in the head with a branch.
The poor Mark VIII is buried :frown:

But other then that in the words of the NYC school chancellor, it's a beautiful day.
