That looks like an old US Robotics modem and a real rotary phone. Is that a real AT&T phone? Those things were virtually indestructible.
Seems like a fitting combination.
Yup. That's my coveted Us Robotics Courier "V.Everything" modem. They were one of the most desirable modems to have back in the BBS (and early Internet) days due to their ability to be upgraded more or less infinitely, and willingness to endure some pretty horrific line conditions.
The phone is a "Northern Telecom" unit, from 1970, but I'm fairly sure that's still ATT at that point.. I used to use it for testing all the time, until I bought myself a proper "butt set"
I'm trying to find a way to get an old LED signboard at one of our high schools back on-line. That little grey box to the left of the modem is a WiFi to serial adapter. It works, but it's finicky. and doesn't support any of the fancy authentication we have going on our network these days, so it's in Ad-Hock mode now, which works.
I've also reached out to our cellular vendor to see if they have some sort of "Cellular to Serial" gizmo. I think that's probably a better fix, even if it does leave me on the hook for recurring service fees.
