Quick and easy carrier/gears questions!

What I'm attempting to prepare for is to go from the stock LSC setup to 4.10/limited slip. So I have a couple craigslisters in my sights, one is selling an 8.8" traction-lok removed from a '92 Mustang GT, and another I have to call regarding 8.8" 4.10 gears bolted to an open carrier. Do I need to look out for any incompatibilities other than the LSD being 28-spline? Gears are gears, if the 8.8" diameter is the same (both ads say 8.8), it should all bolt up in theory? Nothing to worry about such as parts coming from solid axles? Just from hunting around the Ford Racing Parts website, they seem rather compliant...

gears are gears. 8.8 only though.
dont put in 4.10s with a limited slip. it will be one wheel peel madness.

the differentials must be 28 spline when using stock axles.

a diff for an IRS application is what you want. (not mustang GT)

BUT! one from a solid axle car will work. if you end up with a solid axle diff, DO NOT install your half shafts without removing the C clips first. the c clips will lock in and you will have to disassemble the diff to pull the clips to remove your half shafts.

i am using a solid axle trac lok with removed c clips. zero issues in tens of thousands of miles.
stock axles won't fall out. some aftermarket axles will. they are shorter or something.

I know, I was like...huh???

The diff for sale is already removed, I may have mentioned that. There is a photo of it on a table or something. The seller removed that and a set of 3.08 gears in favor of 3.73s, and I assume (he didn't say) a heavier duty LSD. I have no plans to pull the axles and replace them with others.

Are telling us to remove the little c-clips on the stock axles before installing them. I have a diff out of my old 03 mustang GT. I was going to install this along with a set of gears. But now Iam alittle confused.

Yes, remove the c-clip rings on the halfshafts before using them in a non-IRS differential.

At some point, I believe in either 1999 or 2001, Ford started using the same differentials in both solid axle and IRS cars.

If it was me, I'd do a test fit of the half-shafts, with the clip installed, in the differential before I put the cover on, to see if you'd be able to remove the half-shafts.
