Rear Brake Surprise

I'm in the middle of replacing the rear pads on the Wife's Conti. I was surprised to note that the caliper piston will go in only so far and then will "idle" until some magic word is heard. Then it goes all the way in. The idle point is too shallow to allow you to install new pads. At this point, the piston can be turned CCW and it instantly comes back out. But turning CW again makes the piston go in for the amount that it went out and then it back to the idle point. You can turn the piston until you are blue in the face and make NO headway!

I replaced the right pads and it did the same thing. It idled for awhile and then went all the way in.

Is there something I don't understand about this procedure? Do I need to engage the parking brake lever (which was disconnected from the brake cable.) The BOOK says nothing about this.

Any suggestion?

Ok, It's a combination of screw in and push in. You screw it all the way as far as it will go and then you push it in like you do the fronts.

Da!

I've done a bunch of rear disc brake jobs on Fords. The best trick I've found is to remove the caliper and disc, then loosely bolt the caliper back in place to hold it still. Then use a set of big needlenose pliers to engage the notches in the piston while pushing and cranking it in.
