Remove AC Condenser w/o removing radiator?

We are progressing on the 24 Hours of Lemons '94 Mark VIII. On this weekends agenda is to remove AC components and replace the compressor with an AC delete pulley. We'd like to remove the condenser as well in order to increase airflow through the radiator. Our initial inspection indicates this can't be done without first removing the radiator. Can anyone comment? We are likely to leave it in place if it requires pulling the radiator as that's a bit more work than we want to do. We are trying to figure out if we can get it out by brining it forward and then down behind the bumper cover. Thoughts?

No way the condenser will come out in a forward direction.

The radiator is easy to remove.
  • Disconnect the transmission cooler lines and radiator hoses and overflow hose,
  • remove the fan shroud retaining bolts,
  • disconnect the fan motor wire harness,
  • remove cooling fan/shroud,
  • remove upper support retaining bolts and remove supports,
  • then finally lift radiator from vehicle.

You possibly might be able to leave the hoses connected and lift up and tilt back the radiator to allow clearance for the condenser to be removed?

I agree, the radiator removal is easy, and it will give you a chance to clean the front of the radiator out.

Thanks both! We will try to see if their is enough room disconnecting the radiator from the frame and pushing it back. Just trying to avoid re-burping the system yet again. We've already swapped the coolant for water as required for the race and wasn't looking forward to burping it again, but that might be our only option. Thanks again.

Once the cooling fan is removed, there is more than enough room to pull the radiator back towards the engine, and remove and reinstall the a/c condenser without much trouble.

Yes this is true but he doesn't want to open the cooling system I don't see moving the radiator without disconnecting the hoses

Just some quick feedback for everyone. Thanks so much for weighing in on this. We did it yesterday and simply tipping the radiator back gave us more than enough room to pull out the condenser. Delete pulley went on easily and no need to open the system back up and burp it again! Our only hiccup was a small wiring harness that connects to the block (working in tight spaces we thought it was connected to the compressor) which prevented the car from getting ignition. Once we had the new pulley and belt back on and went to start it, it was obvious there was no spark. Looked back up underneath and saw the harness connector was on the block. Figured it was a ground or sensor of some sort, reconnected and it fired right up.

That would've been the Crank Position Sensor that prevented the car from getting the ignition timing signal.

Glad to hear it was otherwise a painless experience. :)

Here's some pics of the early progress. Will post final "after paint and theme" pics once we are done. It's getting it's roll cage this week, then comes back for final prep and theming for Lemons. It will be wearing 2003 LS wheels for the race, rather than the hideous aftermarkets on it currently. Painting it black. IMG_2492.jpgIMG_2497.jpg

I'll admit, I was admiring the car also. Good paint, even. Looks like you've got a nice car to start from

To heck with it though. Please keep us posted. as painful as it will be for us enthusiasts to see one of our cars get hacked up, I love the idea of LeMons.. I want to see this one win.. :D

Yeah, paint and body were nearly perfect. Except for the flaky burgandy hood.... Interior was utterly trashed. So far, we've done completely new brakes at the corners and 90% new lines, new upper and lower control arms, sway links and PS rack. Attacked the leaky (only at startup, but not once warm) oil filter gasket only to find one of the bolts so stripped we couldn't get it out -- might circle back around to this. Currently unable to upload any additional pics. Says beyond my "quota" sometimes. Other times just gives me a warning ! and won't let them upload. Sigh.
