Replacing the steering rack on the CE

I'm replacing the rack on the winter beater CE.

I normally enjoy working on these cars, but this one is a real pain.:)

It started out as a rusted hydraulic line, but I couldn't get one of the rack mounting bolts out. Since I had to remove it, I thought I'd just replace the rack with a rebuilt one.

I ended up having to cut the bolt off. I've almost got it back together, I hope to finish it after work tomorrow after I get the bolt.

The only good thing is I bought a gen 1 rack, with the better ratio. I've been wanting to do that for a long time. I can't wait to drive it.:D

I finally finished this up today, after I got it all together, it leaked. I had to replace the small pressure hose on the rack, there was a pinhole leak in it, and that's all hydraulics need to leak like a sieve.:)

It was easier to take apart the second time, as I had the new mounting bolts, and anti-seize on everything including the rag joint.:)

Here's a photo of the old rack, the cut off bolt, and the new small hose.

Best of luck with your power steering Bill. Did you get to drive it yet?

I didn't have a very good experience with the replacement rack on mine. I'm sure you remember I eventually swapped in a manual rack.

Thanks John. Yes, I drove it down the road, and it feels great. The second gen with a first gen steering ratio is a great combination!

I'm still thinking about a manual rack for one of my summer cars though.:)
