resurfacing rotors - what's the deal?

What's the deal with resurfacing rotors these days. I am putting new calipers on sharon's car so I am also replacing the pads even though they are good since you always want tostart out fresh. The rotors don't exhibit any signs of warpage. They also measure out at 1.020" which is very little wear. I take to the local orielleys to get resurfaced and they try to convince me they are too thin. I am like...they start out at 1.025". They go on with 20 excuses about liability, sub surface rust, rotors aren't designed for resurfacing anymore, blah, blah. Most stores arround here don't even cut rotors. Does anyone even cut them anymore or this simply a ruse to always make you buy new ones?

i think it is a cost thing, the cost of having a machine and then to pay someone to run it, it is just more feasible to replace them. We live in a disposable world now.

They offer the service for $10 per rotor. Just seesm no matter what you bring in they will tellyou it is too thin. I asked her if their policy is they only cut new rotors?

I am wondering if others have the same experience or am I the last person on earth who still tries to resurface rotors.

At $10 per rotor they not making any money, that's got to be a tactic to get your new rotor business. Measuring rotor wall thickness and compensating cuts on overall thickness can be challenging and end with failed results. Over abused rotors should be replaced anyhow, and one with minor abuse can be scuffed up for the new pads.

I do it all the time, as I run into cars that sit a lot, but usually have had brand new OEM parts installed prior to storage. Mind you this is more of a clean up than actual full turning job. The stores locally do it for $8 a piece. They complain a bit too, especially if there is surface rust, but the OEM rotor even after turning is 10x better than the cheap Chinese replacement they sell for $30.

I'm going to try to get a set of rotors turned soon. I've got some decent ones from my parts car. New rotors are expensive.:D

There's a place near where I work, I can drop them off at lunch. I'll see what they say.:)

I got some new quality ones from my Napa buddy and I was impressed as they were also surface treated to prevent rusting. They were about $65.00 each.

I bought the Centric brand coated ones on Rockauto before. The coating helped but did not last. Overall I was very happy with the price. When I did the brakes (Calipers, pads, and rotors) on my car the Price from Rockauto was great. The only hassle is shipping the cores back. This time I had pt get the Wagner ones at Orieley's due ot some ime constraints.

Cores? Seems the shipping would take away from any scrap money they'd get.

I never "cut" a rotor on a vehicle, its either good or bad. Cutting them only causes issues in the long run.

Ohhh calipers. That makes sense. This entire thread is about rotors and you say "ship the cores back". No wonder I was confused. :p

Your are too young lad to remember when rotors were beefy, cutting was the norm and they lasted, even cutting more then once was not uncommon. :)
