I have a rust spot that i need some tips on fixing. Its on the rear quarter behind the door on both sides, drivers side theres a physical hole from it and on the passenger its just some yellowing from it. Whats the best way to fix this without ruining the paint?

rker pnl rust.jpgRear Bkt.jpgLove your sun roof? not for long. The sun roof has drain tubes that end at the rockers. More important to look underneath just in front of rear tire, and check on these braces. Drivers side goes bad more the passenger side. Pic of what I found on my 95. Another place to look, front wheel under inner fender, all kinds of crap gets in this area. I filled it with spray foam, after cleaning crap out, and cut 4"-5" off of the insulation. Check the whole rocker for rust, many guys have replaced complete rocker. If not bad, repair rust, and paint it. I had a 98 silver, and touched up the bumper, and mirror, and you couldn't tell, an easy match. spray paint from Automotivetouchup.com.

Alright thanks ill give those a look soon, being in the midwest i dont expect good news.
The touch up is barely noticable on that one, looks a little lighter but i noticed that with rattle cans you have to do it kinda heavy to get a good match.

I don't think I did any sanding between coats. They make a 2 part clear that'll hold up. you have to say that you'll use a resperator. I just used regular clear, and buffed it a little. Normally I wet sand with 400 gritt

So I had a little bit of time for once and did some painting, not perfect but better than before.

I have a few touch-ups to do on it still... as well as filling the hole

Painting rust is a waste of time. Grind or sand the area down to metal. I've filled holes with spray foam as a base, then fill with bondo/ with fiberglass in it. Build it up with regular bondo till it looks un damaged, a little spot puddy, then paint. I guess it depends on how good a repair your doing. With that much rust on the rockers, how's the brackets just under that area? Safety before looks!

I made sure to sand it just didnt get any pics. I used 120, 220, 400, and 800.
I havent looked personally but when we were doing the tranny my brothers said it didnt have nearly as much rust as you would think. Still have to check it myself though

definetly hide sit a little better. Have you ever done body work? You paint after filling the hole..... and that hole can't just be filled. There is way way more rust damage if the hole is that large. You need to grind off allot paint to see how extensive the damage is. Then you will need to cut out a large section and weld in a replacement. You could probably fill it with bondo but it will never last.

True i do know that the hole is a sign of it being a bigger problem but right now im pretty busy in life with everything and this is a quick fix, hopefully next spring im gonna cut it square and weld in a new piece of metal and inspect the rest of the body and underside.

One thing i found kinda funny was someone once tried to jack up the car from this spot (reason why its dented)

Don't be scared of the bondo for this type of thing. The man who welded all them new panels to my Mustang would cringe but it is the most efficient way to fill a hole.
