Shifter Issue

Carried over from my 'Local Shop in Ma' thread...

'Currently the car is a solid as Jeremi built with the exception that the shifter linkage seems to be loose and I can feel the shifter moving when I hit bumps and such so I want it looked at ASAP (Spring time). I am not sure if it is a function of the crazy custom shifter linkage Jeremi made or my poor manual driving technique. I believe the problem is likely due to my driving the car but the issue didn't start untill the last 200 miles or so and I am much better than when I started (3000 miles ago).'

She originally went into all gears smoothly but for the last few hundred miles there seems to be resistance especially trying to get first gear fully pushed up. 2nd is a little better and I could start to feel 3rd getting tricky.
I sure did pick an awesome car to learn stick shift.

You're gonna make me fly out and personally deliver a jack and jack stands ? ;)

Not much to loosen up there, as all nuts were self locking ones. But everything is possible. See the red bushing ? The two nuts that hold the bracket could be the culprit I guess. Or the bushing itself maybe.

I was actually gonna order a jack and stands today; complete with nice rubber boots to protect the frame. But if you wanna fly out here Boston is great in the Spring. Roads will suk tho.:frown:
I would still prefer someone with experience to actually look at the car.

Could weather be playing a role?

I'm not exactly sure what i'm looking at in Jeremi's photo, but can you lube that bushing? Could it be causing the resistance?

It's definately not a cold weather issue as I have not driven it in the cold. Been parked since early november. The issue feels more like the shifter is out of allignment and as I move it forward and back while in the slot it hits something and I need to wiggle it a bit to get back in the slot and finish sliding into gear. I assume it to be a shifter/linkage issue and not the transmssion iteslf but I simply do not have the experience. Heck, my lack of terminology isn't helping easier.

I am going to get a set of Jack Stands and have a look at this as Jeremi suggests and see. Would be nice to get the car off the ground for the winter anyway and then crawling under there shouldn't be too hard. But getting access is another thing altogether.

You can actually do a lot of troubleshooting from inside the car.
In neutral, pull the shifter knob up and down. Any play ?
Put it in say 4th gear. Any play side to side ?

You can also unscrew the shift knob, pull up the leather boot with the wooden surround.

Then you should see the lower boot. Remove that and you will have full access to the top of the shifter mechanism.
Removing center console might make this even easier.

The man. I'm getting excited; I'll play with the shifter tonight and maybe open up from the top end on saturday. Thanks Jeremi

Finally got a chance to look at this today. Shifter does not move up or down in any position. Shifter does move side to side in all gears including 4th. I believe it has always done this though? Please note I have no point of reference with a stick shift. I always assumed the possible movement left and right was normal.

Took it for a spin to the pub on this beautiful spring New England day and the car drives like a dream. Need to upgrade exhaust though. Soon.
