Smokin pads...

Last night I changed out my front brakes, which look to have been recently done, actually, lots of pad left. I now have Brembo solid (blank) rotors with Hawk HPS pads. Last night I bedded them in, giggling when I saw them begin to smoke, because it looks cool... :D So this morning I'm driving a little hard, not exactly autocrossing, to try out the new front sway bar bushings. I pull into the Tim Robbins here and the brakes are smoking yet again. Any idea how long this should last? I'm guessing there is still some grease on the inside-facing surfaces of the rotors and maybe that is burning off, but the Hawks already are gripping very hard. We will see if they also live up to their claim of very low dusting...

Thanks, Doug.

Yeah, I scrubbed them in a bubble bath, then dabbed them dry with cotton balls before giving them a little baby lotion. :D

Yeah, sorry bout that. I just remember someone somewhere asking recently if it was necessary to clean the oil off of the rotors before installing them. When you mentioned the oil smoking I just :banghead:

Heh. No sweat. I kept them as clean as reasonable during installation. They haven't smoked again since, but I'll give it another test after my driveshaft install today. :D

Assuming that you did clean both sides of the rotors ;), then it's likely that what's burning off is what was left on the cooling vanes between the rotor surfaces.
