The output shaft has teeth machined into it and in turn drives the plastic removable speedo gear. The latter can be accessed by just pulling the tail shaft speed sensor.

Would it be safe to say that the speedo drive gear is machined into the shaft?

So how does Ford use different gear ratios if the speedo drive gear on the output shafts are all the same .I would think the speedo driven gear would get chewed up,
The plastic "speedo" gears vary between the models/gear ratios. The drive gears on the OS are not the same, there are 7 and 8 tooth versions.

I'd suggest leaving the plastic gear alone, and using the Dakota Digital unit to fine tune the OSS count. In the end, it's only used to feed signal to air ride module, and in turn to PS assist, so it's not as crucial as it was say on the 93-96 cars.

Do you know which Dakota Digital model I need for my 97 ?
