Hi Folks, I had the strangest thing happen to my car a couple days ago. I just got off the freeway car was doing great but then as i got about a block away from the house there was a noise from the driver side front of the car, a pretty load vibration, the speedo needle was bouncing to the vibration and it got loader when i put on the brakes. The brakes worked just fine, and i didnt feel anything wrong with the idle. If anyone has any ideas it would be appreciated. Im going to send it over to my mechanic and ill report back with the findings.

I assume you are talking about a Gen 2 Mark VIII (97-98).

Sounds ABS system related. Focus on the front passenger wheel speed sensor as that one is used for the speedometer input also.

If it is not acting up now you could have had debris between the sensor and wheel.

Hope its not the sensor itself as they are discontinued.

Thank Neil,

Im going to take it over to the shop now. When I push on the brake pedal around 20 MPH and below I can feel what can only be described as grinding. and i assume as its intermittent it has something to do with the wheels turning. Ill find out for sure though and share what ever they find.

Thanks again.

Perhaps your brakes are shot and metal and debris is causing your sensor to malfunction

Well the shop couldn't find the exact issue, I'm going to replace both front calipers and hope for the best.

More to follow, i get her back on Tuesday.

The parts you are looking at are Speed Sensors not ABS Wheel Sensors.

They is only 1 Speed Sensor on a Mark VIII and it is transmission mounted and used for shift points.

If you do find aftermarket ABS Wheel Sensors you will be a hero to many.

Used parts are your only option as far as I know.

Good luck

I often learn something myself when researching answers for posted questions and this time is no exception

NAPA now lists front and rear ABS Sensors for the 98 Mark VIII.

They may not truly be available or are the wrong ones but they would be worth looking into.
