Starter not engaging. I can hear the starter running but not kicking over the motor.

I think it the solenoid.

How hard is it to change out the starter?

Fairly straightforward but the top bolt is a PITA.

You may want to check the small wire connector on the solenoid. They tend to corrode and lose contact.

If the starter motor is running without cranking the engine, the bendix gear is not engaging the flywheel which usually means the solenoid is bad.

We had a started once stop working correctly simply because it grew the corrosion across the contacts. All we had to do was clean it off.

I forgot to add it work half the time. I took the car out this morning but I don't trust it to restart. Yesterday, I was at the gas station trying to start her for 20 min.

if you change it, spray some penetrant in the back of the holes to help lubricate the bolts. It is common for them to seize and gall in the aluminum and then break off. The one hard bolt is actually easier to remove by using a very long extension and going at it from the front of the engine.

the starter won't spin unless the solenoid is engaging.
so the solenoid IS moving. however, the little plastic tip on top may have broken off/wore down. if so, it won't engage the starter to the flywheel.

here you can see the tip.

Pulled the starter out.
Put 12volt on the solenoid and it got hot. If I help the solenoid move it work but it's done.

I'm going to drop the starter off at the alternator/Starter repair shop.
That shop rebuild my alternator and did a great job. Worked the first time and still working.

The tip is still on the solenoid.
