Still working on the MG

I'm glad I called this Still working on the MG because I was.:big-grin:

The SU Fuel Pump on the MG has often had a hard time starting up, the old trick was to tap it with a screwdriver handle to get it ticking again. That stopped working. It's a strange design, it's basically a solenoid connected to a spring loaded diaphragm. The solenoid energizes, and moves the diaphragm. A set of 4 points opens the circuit to the solenoid, until the spring brings it back closing the points again, which gives it the typical tic tic tic sound, until pressure is up.:confused-red:
:)
I took the points apart, cleaned them up, put it back together and it's running better than ever now.

Then, I had a sticking caliper on the test ride. I just replaced the calipers 2 years ago. It turned out to be a brake hose that was plugged up. I found that out by cracking the bleeder open and the caliper released. Luckily, I had a new set of hoses I was going to replace as preventative maintenance (too late:)).

It's running and braking great now.

Here's some photos of the pump and points.

That fuel pump design is spectacularly convoluted. Props be to you for repairing it, and not just replacing it with an electric one.. :D

Also, I'll just leave this here:

It was easy enough to clean the points, I may need to replace them in the future though, time will tell, and I don't drive it often.

That was a good video, I have seen it before.:)

I actually spent a lot of time at that MIRA test track in England, testing Jaguar S and X types. :)

No hand brake tests for me though.:eek-large:

You lucky, lucky, SOB.. Clearly you need to write a book. :D
Actually, it wasn't that big of a deal, I was the guy in the back seat running the recorder and/or analyzer. Then after that, we'd take the interior apart, change the carpet, dash pad, or other NVH items, and run it again. It had to be a MIRA driver back then.

I've driven on many other US test tracks though, we used to take turns who drives.:)

I think they are reproductions, I ordered them from Victoria British.

They seem to fit and work fine.
