Ticking sound -- its not a time bomb!

My 98 MarkVIII sometimes gives off a ticking sound from the passenger side when the car is accelerating and under a little stress -i.e. goingup a hill. It sounds like it is coming from around the firewall area. I just turned 47K on this great midnight grey vehicle. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Exhaust leak maybe? Pop the hood and have someone rev it a little - you'll probably be able to hear it that way. The noise will be more pronounced under load as you describe, but it's hard to put a car under load and have it stay still

You running premium fuel? Could just be a bad tank of gas and some detonation occuring.
