Top EGR Valve To Exhaust Manifold Tube Nut

The BOOK says I'm to use a 22mm crowfoot wrench to loosen this nut. A 22mm will not fit. A 24mm will not fit. Just how big a crowfoot wrench do I need to loosen this nut?

Replacing the EGR valve -- maybe. Help!

I think it's a 31mm or a 33mm, that is of course it's not rusted. I just gave in and cut mine off, will delete in the tune latter.

Yeah, 31mm sound right. an 1 1/4 inch will fit it.

I can't get to it from the top. Now trying to loosen bottom nut. Me and liquid wrench are becoming really good friends. So far, it ain't budged.

If I break/cut the tube, are replacement available?

I have not found one, but I've heard they can still be had.

My flex pipe was cracked and I knew that was where my exhaust leak came from. Since headers are going in I chose option B.

I guess if you can get it out in one piece there might be an after market flex pipe you can have welded on.

Liquid wrench, cheater pipe, crescent wrench and many magic words later, the bottom nut came off. The valve and pipe is now out of the car. There is a hole burnt into the tube, right at the start of the flex part of the pipe. So, i'll be doing a pipe search, if a repair is not possible.

Thanks for your feedback.

You have more patience than me. Hopefully there is something out there.

Torrie had the tube. I should get it today.

FYI the nut is 32mm. The BOOK was only 10mm off. What's a little 10mm among friends?

The replacement tube has different sized nuts. It is a custom bent tube, without the user bendable accordion wrinkles in the tube. The top wrinkle is were my old one burnt through. The top nut is 27mm while the bottom nut is 32mm.

And the tube is too small. Laying them side by side, the old one is about an inch longer. It looks like it was made for a motor that sits lower than HOTLNC. I'm trying to have the old one repaired.

Ford says that is the only number they have for it. It makes me wonder what a Ford trained/qualified wrench would do in a case like this...

Take two and make one. ;)

It may come to that. I'd have to do it with the motor out. Getting the angles right while the motor is in-place would be almost impossible.

I've got the old one repaired. Hopefully, it will be fixed enough to get me through the inspection due this month.

Ok, no cigar. The old one leaks like a colander (do sleeves leak?).

Anyway, when started and the old tube in place, along with a new EGR valve and ESR, the motor runs like crap. If I remove the EGR's vacuum line, the motor smooths out. So the tube is leaking enough to give false pressure reading to the computer, via the EGR.

Here is a picture of the two tubes:VGR Tubes.jpg

I've removed the insulators from the tubes. The VGR side is on the left. The right end connects to the catalytic converter. When mounted on the cat, the new one sits below the output port of the VGR.

I've got a search going for the tube, using a paid service. The top tube is the ONLY tube that crosses by part number with Ford/Lincoln.

The DPFE (Digital Pressure Feedback EGR) sensor is what the hoses hook to from the EGR tube to measure the EGR flow across the orifice in the tube.

If the EGR tube was leaking it may indicate a EGR flow when in fact there would be none or indicate no flow when in fact there was EGR flow?

Oh. I called that the EGS -- Exhaust Gas Sensor. Yeah, that's new also. The old one might have been good, but I bought a new one anyway. Matter of fact, the one they sent is plastic and uses a difference connector. They gave me a pig tail to make it fit.
