Touring Package for 97

Does anyone have any idea how many Town Cars in 97 came with the "touring package"? It included various tweaks like 16 inch wheels, suspension upgrades, etc.

I can't say, but I like the sound of "suspension upgrade"

one thing I can tell you is that '96 and '97 had a trouble-prone plastic intake manifold. Many of these were replaced under warranty. I'm told that the thing to look for is an aluminum thermostat crossover tube. If that is present, the manifold has been replaced with the "improved" version. Of course since your old car was a '97, you may well be aware of this already.

I've been shopping these myself recently, so I'm trying to keep up to speed on this stuff.

They used that "faulty" intake mainfold all the way up to 2001. Most have been replaced, but to be honest I'm surprised how many are still out there that haven't been replaced (or where replaced with another "faulty" one). They sure just break at random times too. My parents 96 Grand Marquis's broke in 99 with around 60k. My 96 Cougar broke at 222k in 2010.

Only reason I'm asking about the touring package for 97, as ours had it. I think it also included the moonroof, heated seats and dual exhaust...but I'm not 100% sure if the heated seats and moonroof where included in that.

I'm curious if it was a fairly rare package it should increase the value.

The inital insurance settlement was for $4000. Im getting ready to submit pictures of it cleaned up (beacuse of course it was dirty when wrecked) and all the maintainance we had done since we owned it. Almost $3000 worth of work (a lot of that just normal stuff like tires ($800 set of Michelins), fluid changes, the rest was air suspension and front end suspension work)

4K sounds pretty good. Do you think they'd let you keep the wheels and tires? having an extra set is always useful. at least in my neck of the woods.

I haven't really considering keeping any of the parts, just because we plan on getting an 02 or so Lincoln. Tires are always good to have, but I don't like clutter either. Those tires were in good shape even though they had close to 60k on them, they were no where near the tread wear indicator. I think they were rated for 80k.

I've never totaled out a car before, do they allow you to keep parts off of it if you want? I figured it would "lessen" the value when they sell it to a junk yard.

Generally not if they were 'installed', usually there is a rider covering custom parts. Though I have known people who have exchanged stock wheels for custom wheels from the wreck, remove sub-woofers, etc...

You do have the option of buying the car back from the insurance company. You may want to inquire about that?

Any car I've had totaled out I have bought back from the insurance company for 10% of the value of the car. Basically they just deduct 10% off the check they were going to give you and you keep the car with no marks against the title.

The last time I did this was a little while ago so I'm not sure if things have changed since then.

Good luck!
