The TC light comes on for no apparent reason as if I had traction loss and then turns off a few moments later any thoughts

I over greased the front end on my 95, and the sensors, and sprocket got real dirty, and with a bad wheel bearing ( got hot) the grease baked on the sensor, and cleaner wouldn't work, had to scrape it with a razor blade. Metered ok after it was cleaned. I read where 98's had sensor problems. 98's are one year part.

So if I don't have a check engine light on I could still have codes stored is that correct ?

yes.

You may need a scan tool that puls ABS codes. Not all of them do. What year is your car?

You really need the code pulled. It is 99% likely you have a sensor or plug problem.

Just because its easy you can take a multi-meter to your battery and check its voltage at idle. I had a slightly different problem, my traction control flashed a code when I spun the tires (wet payment). Turns out traction control malfunctioned on my car before the charging system light came on.
