TrueTrac

Just curious if anybody running one of these units experiences a clunking noise during deceleration particularly from around 30-40mph? I learned to deal with it, but am wondering if there could be an underlying issue. I spoke with a rep from Eaton and he said that there should be no noise what so ever with a TrueTrac . A quick google search showed mixed reviews (some have noise/some don't) on other boards.

The car is fit with delrin bushings all throughout and a 4" driveshaft, and I know the rear end was set up by a very reputable shop.

I have the TrueTrac in the Blue Flame and never notice any noises.

Nor do I see how it really could make a 'clunking' noise? As painful as it may sound, it may be worth removing the cover for a quick inspection.

I was afraid you might say that :frown-blue:.

The folks on the mustang boards experiencing the noise attributed it to "normal slack" in the drivetrain on an irs car (sounded odd to me).

However, the fact that you're not experiencing these noises leads me to believe something is carrying on. Thanks for your personal input.

I have a 4" drive shaft on the grey car and I occasionally get a clunk going from reverse to drive or the other way which I'm 99% sure has something to with the drive shaft.

So, maybe not the diff?

Just a thought... and you should probably not listen to me at all when it comes to anything mechanical... :D

Mine does this as well occasionaly when engaging from park to drive/reverse or drive to reverse/reverse to drive, but not all the time. However, the "clunk" always seems to be there on lower speed decelerations. Higher speed decelerations are quiet/smooth as can be.

I just remembered J said he didn't like how the pinion brace aligned (not sure if that could be a factor).

Thanks for the input on the driveshaft, might be on to something there :smile-purple:.

A clunk on when you shift from drive to rev or the other way around and when you let off the gas would be "slack" as you put it in the drive line.
Some is normal, it should not however clunk or have a metallic sound to it. I have a 67 merc that did that, right after it developed a slight humming vibration. It was the ujoints in that one, dry as a bone and rusty inside.
I would jack up the rear an put it on jack stands, check for play in the ujoints before you pull the rear cover. It could be that the depth on the pinion wasn't set correctly and that the play is truly in the rear end.

I experienced something like this as well on my (bone stock) '86. That slack turned out to be caused by /very/ worn U-Joints. Replacing those fixed it completely.

It's still currently on jack stands for the winter. Weather doesn't seem to be as brutal for this weekend, I'll try getting under it and checking for any noticeable play in the U-Joints. *Fingers crossed* I'm hoping thats what it is and not a problem with the pinion setting or a backkash issue... I really don't want to have the rear end torn apart :err-what?:.

Thanks for the advice guys!

I had some bad clunking when shifting into reverse, mine turned out to be loose, worn, diff mounts. They also caused a slack feel while driving.

Given those symptoms, Id check for slack in the Front diff mount bushings, U-Joints, and gear backlash.

I crawled under the car but didn't notice any play in the U-Joints. As of now I'm guessing/hoping it's just added "nvh" from the Delrin bushings (including subframe) throughout the car as well as the extra braces. The front differential mount bushings also appeared to be fine and since I've yet to put 3,000 miles on this car upon receiving it in 2011 I really don't want to tear into the rear end unless necessary.

Thank you all for your time/suggestions :).

Not to say it is your problem, but I've seen many bad u-joints that didn't display any play unless it was literally falling apart. Just because it didn't feel loose "in the car" doesn't mean it isn't a problem. The u-joint can really only be truly examined properly with the driveshaft removed.

It is likely with the suspension upgrades you do experience enhanced NVH issues.

Look on the bright side, whatever it is will eventually get bad enough to easily identify. :)
