Two Questions of Doom! Wooooo!

Hi, gang.

Well, here they are:

I've got a 1994 MK8. There's a guy who has a 1996 MK8.

1. Will the 1996 MK8 HVAC dash control thingie work in the 1994? (It's visibly different, but I don't know if that carries over to the plug ins on the back)

2. Will the 1996 cluster work in the 1994? They're both analog...but I don't know if they're similar, due to the 96 being OBDII...

If not, I'm kinda looking for both of those for my 1994 MK8.

Any suggestions would be welcome...

I forget the actual part number but I do believe it is a '96 EATC 'new style button' that will work in the earlier years.

Hmmm... good question on the instrument cluster. I want to say yes but I would need to look at the EVTM to be confident. There's nothing in the instrument panel that is different in the '96 to earlier years but that doesn't mean the signals are the same? So I suppose it's entirely possible it looks the same but does not function the same.

Oddly enough, I'm curious if they are indeed the same, as any and all "warning" lights are in the center of the dash...my tach is stuck, but I just now noticed that "gen I tach problem" thread a few minutes ago.

I'm going to go ahead and try to pick up both items anyway, and see if the later HVAC control works in the 1994 car, as it looks better anyway. Mine has almost every button center punched out of it, due to the previous owner mistaking it for a texting keyboard...

A tach that appears stuck is caused by the tach needle hitting the printed paper dial face. This is a very common problem as the glue on the back side sometimes weakens. The cure is to remove the instrument panel, remove the cover and use a fork to pull of the tach pointer needle and the carefully re-stick the gauge face. Push the tach needle back on and reassemble. Some where there is a how to article written up on this, because it was so common in Gen l's.

While I couldn't find a part number, I did indeed use a '96 EATC in my '93 according to an upgrades file I found.

I've heard the 96 EATC makes the 94 blower motor run slower. I'm going to test this someday, as I have a 96 EATC in my green 94 now, and I have a 95 "hard button" EATC from my parted out black 94 that I want to put in to test this.

...you wouldn't happen to have anything concerning the HVAC, would you...good buddy?

lol.
you know, now that you mention it... ;)

(these are the 93 and 96 evtms BTW. not sure if that was clear or not.)

the connector is labeled/oriented differently, but as far as i can tell, it all matches color/circuit number wise.

if you need anything else, let me know.

I can't tell any difference between the HVAC pins, either. It was wonderful of Ford to switch from alphabetic to numerical pin locations, but beyond that, yeah, I can't see anything different, either.

Thank you bunches, sir.

Now it's off to figure out why this heap is getting such horrible fuel mileage.

O2 sensors are a maintenance item. Unless yours have been changed recently you may want to start there.

Oh yeah, gotta love the previous owner, who 'maintained it meticulously'.

It still has the factory Ford sensors in place...and there are currently three codes each for both sensors stored in the ECM...I didn't know you could have that many, and I used to run my own repair shop.

And I also hope I never run across who thought it would be a great idea to put the connectors in such a crappy place, as I physically can't reach either side from up top...yeah, it might be a great idea to avoid any dark alleys in the state of Oregon, as I have "Mr. Thingy" waiting for him or her.

1+ for an LS swap, I need to go dust off the 5.3 in the garage.
