Unemployment Question

Sort of an odd question, but: I got a promotion today at work. More responsibility, but NO pay increase.

I am, of course, complaining. Loudly.

If I were to quit, would this be a situation where I could collect unemployment? State is Illinois.

If denied, you can appeal.....This leads to a hearing with the Labor Board and a company rep.....I deal with this in Fla all the time....People quit....File a claim, get denied, appeal...lose to me.

In 10 years I am undefeated in claim denial appeals.

There are other company reps who LOSE all the time though, so it depends on the case presented..

Remember unemployment money IS considered income, which means you must claim it at years end with the IRS.

You really need to get laid off if you hate your job and want to collect, but most times employees end up just quitting first....screwing their opportunity to file a worthwhile claim.

Something else I tell my disgruntled employees is that if they weren't working for me, they'd be working someplace else.......so either make the best of it, or go find another job.
They can work forever in my line of work.....
(remember, this a jail atmosphere with a high turnover)

So, take it as you will.....but its probably not worth the risk..

Hey Trixie!

If you really play with the thought of quitting the job over this, have you thought about declining the promotion, which is definitely your right to do?

I mean, I dont know your work environment, but if they would terminate you because of your decline, you would get unemployment, and possibly could even sue them for wrongful discharge, depending on state laws.

Had to quickly ask my wife because of that...she is a paralegal working for an employment law firm, so if you need any more info, let me know!

Marcus.

Thank you everyone!

Maybe this is important: This is actually a restructuring, turning two levels into three. However, this new level that I am put into, while the same title I had before, was presented to us as a higher level than we've had before. So, 3 out of 5 people at my level were put into the middle level (with no pay change), and one other woman and I were put into the highest level (again with no pay change), and were told it was a promotion -- which wouldn't it be, since it was not a demotion for the other three to be put into a level lower?

Marcus, I did ask why I can't be put into the middle level, with the others. Apparently, no one had considered that I, and the other woman this effects, might not want this job, and they have to find out what to do.

I don't think they are going to fire me, for lots of reasons. And I wouldn't quit just because of this, but I truly do not need the added stress that will ensue from what the new job description entails. Basically, they want to get more work out of us for less pay. We're going to be expected to do the manager's jobs, without the manager pay (or training), and they know that I am not at all interested in applying for a position as a manager, nor is the other woman put in at the higher level.

As far as I know, I won't quit right away, just wanted to consider all of my options here, and the unemployment issue is an unkown to me. I will wait to see what HR can come up with, but I'd rather be more informed, than less.
