What does this mean.. ETC failure mode ??

Hi All,

I haven't been on in a while but thought I would throw my 2 cents in here for what its worth. I have a 04 LS V8 which is my daily summer driver. I started having the ETC "Failsafe Mode" fault problem last year or the year before. I have been friends with my local Ford dealership since before I got my license. (Dad worked in sales, I drove for parts when they were short handed. (after license.)) When I first brought them the car after I had reset it they told me the codes were not set. I believe them due to my relationship with them. I took the car, it happened within a week. I shut the car down and restarted it, then brought it to them. They still saw no codes. They changed out the main comp, as I recall. It didn't happen until late last fall. I put the car up for the winter and decided to deal with it this year. It just happened again a month ago. I have since moved so brought it to a new Ford dealership. (They have as good a rep as the ones I am friendly with.) They couldn't find codes/any problem. I had them keep it for a week to have them try to duplicate it. No avail. On the way home from picking up the car I got it to do it. They had me bring it back. No Codes! At this point they changed the Throttle Body. I knew there was a TSB out, and they changed it on my word. They stated that they are supposed to "witness" the code themselves to make the repair. The car went 2 weeks without an event. It was running smoother and shifting better than it had since I bought it. On the way to work it did it. I "limped" it to them so they could scan it while in the "Engine Failsafe" mode. They were able to get some codes this time, so we will see what happens.

Mine only does it while accelerating. Typically on a ramp getting onto a highway. I don't have to have it mashed to the floor. Sometimes its as it downshifts, but today it was a gradual acceleration to merge. I expressed to them I felt it is a safety hazard. I may need that power and find myself with a truck in my trunk instead.

I will let you know the outcome.

About 5000 miles ago, I replace my throttle position sensor per the
TSB that Driller brought up. My ETC Failure-Engine Failsafe Mode just recurred for the first time. I checked Oasis and found another TSB (17315) which says to "inspect the 14290 wire harness take out to connector C237 for Chaffing on the PCM bracket." I wasn't sure where this was in order for me to take a look at it. It said it's on diagram page 151-28, but I haven't found this diagram. Any thoughts on the location?

A quick browse with Google also turned up a TSB(20767) which said that the ETC error accompanied by only by trouble code P2106 could be due to an improperly sealed air box creating a spike on the mass air flow sensor. That seems a bit sensitive. My air filter is aftermarket, but I wouldn't think something that small should be able to cause the PCM to react so severely.

Also, the TSB for the TPS sensor lists a PCM re-calibration. Is that essential?

Is your air filter a K&N? You could have excess oil on the MAF sensor and that will cause a lot of issues.
