What mods while trans is out

Took the 93 w/65K miles, into a trans shop after numerous failed attempts to correct trans shudder and surging at 3-4 shift, including trans flush, Mercon V. DR. Tranny's Sudder Fix, Lucas additive etc, etc. Trans is now being rebuilt. What mods can I have the trans guy do while its out? beside the 1-2 acu. update? What Torque converter? It's a stock car used for everyday commuting in LA traffic. That's 85 mph in the AM and 20 stop & go in the PM for 42 miles each way. I would to maintain the 21/22 mpg I'm getting now.
What do I gain with the J-mod? Should I go back to a stock TC?

It may be a good idea to install the extra lube line to the rear bushing. If you go for a 4.10 rear gear later, it will be needed.

J mod will make it shift harder. Do that.

Skip the tailshaft lube. Not needed even with gears. I've run to FL and back twice (from MI) and MD and back, with 4.10's with no forced lube mod, no problem.

Other than that, maybe try a newer mustang stock torque converter, or a marauder converter. Not sure on the stall speeds. If you're not racing you probably just want something mild, so no need for an aftermarket high stall unit.

Also make sure they install a mechanical diode one way clutch while the transmission is apart. I believe there are a few other updated parts that can be incorporated, check the writeup on the TCCOA site. But the MD OWC is the most important.

Thanks, The shop will install a new 1-2 modulator kit, 2-3 modulator kit, Mechanical diode clutch, TC solonoid, reverse drum, all new soft parts & bushings, an updated multi pack clutch pack? New TC with current updates(97 up) and a trans cooler. R&R the trans and Mercon V for $2100. Does this sound right? I know I could do it for less but I dont have the time, rack, or back for this project. Plus they give a 12/12 warranty. (AAMCO don't you know)

eh, don't know about AAMCO. have heard some bad things. Also there was an AAMCO reciept in my suburban when i bought it with about 100,000 miles (on the reciept). Truck needed a new tranny at about 145k miles. So i dunno.

But that is all the right stuff to do.

Honestly, if it were me, i'd go to a junkyard and get a '98-up tranny (mustangs are fine, 00-01 has even more "upgrades") and change out the VSS, MLPS, TCC solenoid, and output shaft speed sensor (use the parts off your current tranny or buy new for your year car) and install it myself. Should cost about $400, maybe $600 if you have to buy all the tools you need. Figure a case of beer for a helper.

Do what Dave said.

If you want high performance, and want to spend $2K, get an Art Car Extreme tranny. Handles 600 HP. Bill at supercoupeperformance.com can hook you up.

Yea, I know I coulda, shoulda, woulda, unfortunately I dont have the time nor the facilities to do that. I hurts to spend all that money but at least I have a 12 month warranty. Besides I want to put all of the trick stuff into my street rod. But thanks for the input...

And what Dave said about AAMCO as also correct. Some of the biggest scam artists of all time.

If you get a 12 month warranty, your tranny will fail at month 13.

You're better off finding a smaller local shop.

This is in caps on purpose:

INSTALL A SUBSTANTIAL TRANNY COOLER.

This will be the most important mod to your car. Unfortunately, it will not make a perceivable difference in day to day driving.
