The ones that come from the factory in the Cobra Mustangs with IRS are slightly different than the ones in the solid axle cars. There is some disagreement about whether the solid axle unit is okay to use in the IRS. However, many people on this board use the solid axle design without any problems.

Is it possible to find a complete rear-end nowadays or do you have to buy the kits? I heard you can no longer get them from Ford.

Correct, the gears are the same. The installation kits are different.

The 'factory posi' is known as Traction Lock in Ford lingo, and is a simple spring loaded clutch pack type differential. I know several with quite a bit more HP than I that have the same setup with no problems.

The traction Lok is good for street use and stock-mild drag racing.

Get an Eaton or Auburn if you are going to do track or autocross, or if you want better performance in snow.

You're right Mark, Ford used to sell the cobra pumpkin, a direct fit but they no longer do. I'd bet you could find plenty of wrecked cobra's to get a used one though.
