Winter Rig…

Ok, so I’m at this point where I don’t know if I want to try and winterize the Saxmobile, which has proven to be exceptionally ill suited for any sort of real winter travel, or if I want to pick up something for the winter.

Now I have to admit I’ve been more then slightly smitten with this particular auto…

But I’m open to other suggestions…

These pics are a 04 DTS, with literally every option you could get. Heated front and rear seats, DVD nav with CD changer, 17” wheels, 3 zone climate (driver, pass, and rear seat), rear parking thingies, sun roof I’m sure there is more I’m not thinking about, anyway, it’s freakin’ loaded…

So what do you, my on-line automotive support system think?

Characters are showing up wierd in your post.

That would do the trick for winter, but some snow tires and a few bags of sand for the trunk would be cheaper and work just as well!

I swore off caddies.

The last one I had, I swore I would not own another unless I could afford a new one every two years. :(

BTW, do you suppose snow/ice only started in the past couple decades? How do you think we got around in RWD cars of yesteryear?

Tires. Weight. Practice.

Limited slip differentials were more popular. I've remember quite a few 2WD work trucks that outperformed similar 4WD models simply because the 4WDs had open differentials while the 2WDs were equipped with a limited slip diff.

Are caddies much worse in the reliability area? I love my Mark, but the reliability is in the toilet.

And the limited slips are very nice...or even better - AWD. My wife's H2 can pretty much eat up anyone in the snow. Then there's also the Subaru WRX...

Caddy northstar motors are referred to among many as "deathstar". They like to eat head gaskets. A friend of mine just bought a used STS, and while it's a very nice car, the head gasket was blown. And it's like a $4000 repair, not a DIY job because of special tools and whatnot. Apparently those deathstar motors make mod motors seem easy to work on. Luckily my friend got his covered under ebay buyer protection.

Plus you have to take into account that it's in the engine bay the wrong way, driving the wrong wheels, in a very heavy car. I wouldn't expect the trans to last any longer than it does in a mark, and i would expect it to be more of a pain in the ass to change.

You won't be saying that if you get a Caddy. They're in a whole different league. For instance:

- GM actually recommends using stop-leak in the coolant to help prevent tiny head gasket leaks from eroding until they totally blow out.

- A check valve in the oil pump likes to stick open and drastically reduce the oil pressure. The fix is to put an *additional EIGHT quarts* of oil in and run the engine, and that's supposed to help blast the sludge out of the valve.

- GM considers it "normal" to burn 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles. And a lot of 'em do.

And we gripe about our timing chain tensioners rattling! :9

Plus that's just the ENGINE. The suspension's just as bad. Check out some Cadillac forums and read about 'em yourself.

Ok, so first let me say that my text looks just fine to me, but apparently it looks crazy to everyone else, so I choose to hold this as further evidence that I am obviously special.

Not special in that 'education' way mind you, but special in that clearly better then you way... :+

Anyway, to answer JP, the original Saxmobile and I lived in northern NH for quite some time, saw plenty of snow, got in plenty of practice, and was still a pain to drive. For anyone who's ever seen in the trunk of my car, weight isn't a problem... A posi would have helped a lot.

There is a steep albeit short hill at the end of my street that has a stop sign at the top. If there is any snow at all, I know there is no way I'll be able to get out of my street with the MK8.

As for the motor issues, my family has had Cadillacs for as long as I can remember, the Northstars all use oil over 100K, they've never had one that didn't. Other then that, my folks have never had any other reliability issues, and my people are hard on cars. The head thing is only a problem if you overheat the motor. My mother cooked a few 4.9 pre Northstar Caddy motors that way. The most mileage my family has put on a Northstar was a 2000 STS that they got new and racked up 188K on before it was traded on a new CTS-V.

I would say the reliability is no worse then the MK8, that's for sure.

One thing I would miss is the HIDs, that's for sure...

Anyway, if I pick something up, it won't be until the end of Sept at the earliest, cause that's when I'd be thinking about putting winter tread on the MK.

I don't think I could drive a subaru, and I'm not big into SUVs and really not into trucks, if that helps...

So keep the suggestions coming!

Actually, I've considered a Powertrax No-Slip Traction System for the differential in the Town Car... www.driveline.com

I have to say that I have owned an Escalade from when they first started making them and never never had a single problem with the caddies. I also have owned Naviagtors and always had some type of problem with them. That is why I switched to the Caddy. There are always people that will have problems with certain models and every model will be known for certain problem. For a winter car that caddy would work nice as long as it was taken care of and you continue to take care of it.

I don't know what I could be hitting...

:+ ::: looks for the … key ::: :+

But I guess do me a favor and let me know the next time one of my posts looks like gibberish. It would appear, I suppose unsurprisingly, that I'm the only one for whom the posts look normal.

So anyway, any other car suggestions, or are we just pretty much just in a yes/no for the cadillac situation? :D
