Does anyone know of any good products to get really old tint off the rear window. Car is really old (1983) and that tint is making it impossible to see through the rear window. Or do i have to resort in a knife and scrape technique.

RE: Getting old Tint off

oh btw what tint do you have right now?? i'm thinking about doing 5% back and 15% sides otherwise its just not dark enough.

I believe window tint remover from your local auto parts store generally works well. Give it a try!

It works well enough, but you're still going to scrape more than you ever have before. I've gone through that ordeal once, and I swore I would sell the vehicle before I ever do it again.

I read on the care instructions I got with my new tint 'do not use window cleaner with AMMONIA in it, because that is what is used to REMOVE the tint'. I thought ammonia was the primary agent in most glass cleaners. Trying to remember that and turning off the suspension switch in the trunk is making me a nervous wreck.

Its really easy getting it off, takes 5 minutes, they have these kits for sale. I’m not concerned about taking off the side windows, I have done it before, and it was a walk in the park.... what I am concerned about however is the REAR window... Because the method I use involves going over it with a solvent and using a blade... what will happen to the RED defroster lines? Is there not a special procedure for it?

Something very light, not enough for summer heat, and no insulation layers.

All I know is the shop I took the car to would tint the whole car for $200 if she was virgin, but they wanted another $200 to get the ruined back window tint off. Makes me think it might not be that easy.

Nooobody likes that rear window tint removal job and I couldn't find anybody who would guarantee that they wouldn't ruin the defrosters. The defroster lines are only metallic paint and you run the risk of lifting the lines off even if you don't use a razor blade. The gal who did mine has 20 yrs. experience and she says;

Do it on a REALLY hot day. Spray the window with a mix of ammonia and soapy water. It stinks so badly you have to hold your nose. After spraying a portion of the window, stick some syran wrap to it to hold the moisture in. Then go have a beer to let it soak in. She uses a popcycle stick or even a flat tipped screwdriver to get the corners started and just pulls it off with her fingers until she gets to a dry area and starts the procedure over again. She sometimes even uses a hair dryer or hot glue gun to get the glass hot enuff but you have to be careful the heat don't break the glass. Also, there's two or three layers which come off independently. :(

Her name is Linda Guay and she's a real sweetheart. She said if anybody's having a problem to call her. Mobile is (949)293-0326

RE: Getting old Tint off

When I bought my mark the tint had turned green. I took it to a shop and they removed the old tint with some kind of steam machine or something. Charged me $100.00 to get the old tint off and put a new sheet on, and it took them about two hours to do the job. That was here in Arlington Tx. I don't know where you are, but surely they should have something like that where you are. Almost every shop I called was pretty competitive, it was just a matter of who could see me right then. Yes the defroster works fine.

RE: Getting old Tint off

yeah, many stores want to rip me off, so i might not even tint the rear window. Sides are enough.... I guess :( can I put tint over existing tint? LOL.
