HOW ABOUT THEM OWLS!!!

Rice Owls that is! What a great series! Stanford again showed a lack of depth in their pitching staff, lack of conditioning of their pitchers, and overall fatigue - which is fair they had to play 2 more games than Rice did. 5 pitchers in the final game. Rice used 3 pitchers the entire series, the final game their guy pitched a CG. Rice played like there was no tomorrow (even on day 1) and was a huge local favorite! See you next year, Owls!

RE: HOW ABOUT THEM OWLS!!!

They played a great game! I've watched most all the games and thought it was a shame that the umpiring got a little too visible for my tastes during the 2nd game with Stanford...kinda like the home plate umpire started taking himself a bit too seriously. To give Stanford credit, they played a helluva series. I was glad to see Rice start hitting the ball again in the last game. Congrats to those kids and their coaches.

We'll be back next year!!!!(LSU)

RE: HOW ABOUT THEM OWLS!!!

LSU is back every year! (or so it seems) so is Stanford. that's probably why the Omaha crowd generally roots against them (sorry but we do!) Rice had a lot of local support because they had never been here before, were such a small school, and played so well.

Stanford suffers every year from pitching problems. Not so much lack of talent, but lack of depth in their squad, and lack of endurance. Also they've had some coaching mistakes, like not getting into the bullpen early enough and so not having a ready relief. So Rice was able to pound out 14 runs against some pitchers who hadn't held the ball in post season...

But the visiting fans are the best part of the week. A couple years ago the "Rajun Cajuns" basically took over every bar within 5 miles of the stadium and proceeded to buy shots for everyone in sight. Now _that's_ some good fans! They came by the bus load up from La. Tigers fans like to have a good time too, but not like dem cajuns!

Marcia, did you come to Omaha for the series?

RE: HOW ABOUT THEM OWLS!!!

No, I haven't made it up there yet, but have been watching it since they have been televising it. Remember when ESPN was just starting up and they were televising college baseball games all week long? I've been a college baseball fan since Maese (Ron Maestri) coached at the University of New Orleans back in the '70's. I got really, really hooked when Witchita State and Miami were playing and Frazier put on that crazy pick-off play with WSU's coach's brother on 1st base. You remember that one? Frazier (Miami's coach) said he knew that kid always dived back headfirst on pickoff attempts, so they had the pitcher "throw" to first, the Miami dugout was on the 1st base side and started yelling and pointing toward the fence, the 1st baseman and right fielder ran toward the fence. When the kid got up and ran to 2nd, the pitcher threw him out! He never threw the ball to 1st! That was it for me, I was hooked forever!

I'm still trying to talk some of my friends into going up there next year, regardless if LSU makes it or not. I don't think they want to sit thru every game with me though!}>

I was rooting for Rice, also. They bounced back from the night before really well and from some calls in the last game that could have broken their focus. USL or U of L Ragin' Cajuns fans are definitely one of a kind! If there is anyone on this earth that
knows how to throw a party or have a good time, it's the people from the Lafayette area and the Cajun people...good people, good food, great times!

Yeah, come on up! We'll setup a mark8 corrall in the season-ticket-holder parking lot and run out for beers between innings.

I don't remember that play but it really repesents the whole feeling of the series :) When I'm old and retired (to Key West) I'll probably make the drive up for the series each year and camp out in my Winnebago by the stadium.
