Minn. Trooper Writes 205 Mph Ticket
Minnesota Trooper Writes 205 Mph Speeding Ticket to Man Riding Motorycle

The Associated Press

WABASHA, Minn. Sept. 21, 2004 — With a State Patrol airplane overhead, a motorcyclist hit the throttle and possibly set the informal record for the fastest speeding ticket in Minnesota history: 205 mph.
On Saturday afternoon, State Patrol pilot Al Loney was flying near Wabasha, in southeastern Minnesota on the Wisconsin border, watching two motorcyclists racing along U.S. Highway 61.

When one of the riders shot forward, Loney was ready with his stopwatch. He clicked it once when the motorcycle reached a white marker on the road and again a quarter-mile later. The watch read 4.39 seconds, which Loney calculated to be 205 mph.

"I was in total disbelief," Loney told the St. Paul Pioneer Press for Tuesday's editions. "I had to double-check my watch because in 27 years I'd never seen anything move that fast."

Several law enforcement sources told the newspaper that, although no official records are kept, it was probably the fastest ticket ever written in the state.

After about three-quarters of a mile, the biker slowed to about 100 mph and let the other cycle catch up. By then Loney had radioed ahead to another state trooper, who pulled the two over soon afterward.

The State Patrol officer arrested the faster rider, 20-year-old Stillwater resident Samuel Armstrong Tilley, for reckless driving, driving without a motorcycle license and driving 140 miles per hour over the posted speed limit of 65 mph.

A search of speeding tickets written by state troopers, who patrol most of the state's highways, between 1990 and February 2004 shows the next fastest ticket was for 150 mph in 1994 in Lake of the Woods County.

Tilley did not return calls from the newspaper to his home Monday. A working number for him could not immediately be found by The Associated Press on Tuesday.

Only a handful of exotic sports cars can reach 200 mph, but many high-performance motorcycles can top 175 mph. With minor modifications, they can hit 200 mph. Tilley was riding a Honda 1000, Loney said.

Kathy Swanson of the state Office of Traffic Safety said unless Tilley was wearing the kind of protective gear professional motorcycle racers wear, he was courting death at 200 mph.

"I'm not entirely sure what would happen if you crashed at 200 miles per hour," Swanson said. "But it wouldn't be pretty, that's for sure."

Not very accurate due to the fact that he used a stopwatch. There could be a lot of error involved. Guy could have been going from 150-250 mph. Still really fast though.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

It's VERY inaccurate. Police seldom know what they are talking about with regards to motorcycles. With a few minor mods...yeah RIGHT!! The Honda 1000 in question, the CBR1000RR is also ridden by AMA Superbike champ Miguel Duhamel. Miguel's $100,000 CBR1000RR, tuned by Honda American with HRC Honda Japan parts on it hit 194MPH in PERFECT conditions at Daytona Speedway. Miguel's bike has also been in Honda's windtunnel. There is absolutely no way that street bike with ALOT of mods would run 200MPH...stock form it runs 175. Currently, there are a couple of bikes that will run 200MPH, but they are wildly modified (turbos). The CBR1000 requires just under 1 mile to get to top speed. I'd imagine with a good lawyer, this guy will get off easily. If you'd like to see top speeds of all bikes currently manufactured, check here: http://www.sportrider.com/bikes/146_perf_nums/

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

sweet website. Yea that's what I thought. A CBR1000 not even sure that it was the bike in question here since they just said "honda 1000" wouldn't go past 200mph. Since those insane turbo hayabusas top out somewhere around 200 or a little over. Those make some major power though.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

THose turbo busa's go a lot faster than 200. I have heard of them going 240+mph. See a lot of video's where they peg the speedo and the tach still keeps climbing.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

It's been a while since I looked into it but I could've sworn that I seen from factory the bikes would max out at 197. I thought it was the Ninja a couple years ago because I remember the Ninja and Busa going back and forth as the fastest bikes. The Busa was the fastest for quite some time until they started to restrict the bikes and then the Ninja took over but like I said this was some time ago so I'm not sure if its all correct.

"Ehhhhhhh. Wrong guess, Hans. Wanna go for double jeopardy where the scores can really change?"

;-)

I't all about the gearing. WSB racers have to be geared lower than a stock crotch rocket because the WSB riders have a lot of turns to deal with. Not to mention they run a LOT smaller engine and platform. Big-bore commercial bikes are set up for straight line performance and top speed. There were in the late 90's, before the manufacturers toned them down a bit, at least two bikes capable of 200+ mph bone stock out of the box. Ninja 1200 and the Hayabusa. With a little modding, Hondas and Suzis have broken that barrier too.

Hitting 200 on something that light is no big deal, well from a technical aspect anyway. Personally, you'd have to surgically remove my scphincter muscle from the seat, I'd be so scared. I've done 140 on a ZX9, and 155 in my old 540i (car), but higher? No thank you, sir.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

Recently a turbo busa destroyed the land speed record for bikes at bonneville by over 100 MPH.
I believe it was closer to 260!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

dude that honda did not go that fast ok. the police need to get radar guns. my buddy has got over 220 na on his busa both gps and radar verified. he has also set a couple of speed records at a top end race in maxton NC, riding both his busa and his budies turbo busa.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

....and I suppose your buddies Busa has "minor mods" just like the cop says.....LOL...

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

dude my buddy has minor bult ons as well as the major ones too. he has done alot of top end racing and has seen a lot of honda 1000's not even come close with major bult ons. it is obvious that the story is a load of ####.... the cops dont understand that you can not simply clock some one by hand and be accurate at that speed. that is like saying that the stock speedo is a porsche is correct when it say 202 when the car is actually going 190. that cops reaction time is just not good enough.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

Not that I have much to offer here, as I know NOTHING about motorcycles, but I saw a bike at the track a couple of weeks ago that ran a trap speed of 165 MPH. I can't remember the E.T., but I'm pretty sure it was in the 8's. All I know about it was that it was purple and had nitrous. :D Everyone there was oohing and aahing over that run, especially considering the fact that he almost lost it when he launched.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

I am no pro on this stuff, but when I changed the sprocket on my bike to gain better accelleration my top speed went down. Kinda like changing the gears in my car. Would that have an effect on the top speed of the bike?

If quizzes are quizzical, what are tests?

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

Flamark,

Absolutely. If you alter the gearing for better "off the line" acceleration performance, you loose up top. Vice versa for top end speed. But with the top end, there comes a point where the engine doesn't make enough HP to take advantage of very tall gearing. I once rode a bike that, on paper, was geared for 220MPH+. It wouldn't go any more that 190MPH.

You need serious HP to make big gains in top end. We can express this as top speed is a function of the cube root of engine power. So for example, if you want to increase top speed by 10%, how much extra HP will you need? Thus 1.10 cubed is 1.33. So we need 33% more engine power to gain only 10% in top end.

Alternatively let's say we tune an engine and achieve 10% extra power - how much will top speed go up by?. Speed is proportional to the cube root of power - i.e. to the cube root of 1.10 = 1.03. So speed will only increase by about 3%.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

it's not cubed, it's squared.

The power required to overcome wind resistance is proportional to the square of speed. The power required to overcome rolling resistance is proporional to speed. So to double your speed you need slightly less than 4 times the power.

RE: 205 Mph Speeding Ticket

Ummm i dont think that bike is capable of over 180 stock or modded....but id damn sure like to find out...and sponsers? ill put your stickers all over it and you could video tape me from the helicopter.
