RE: Interesting
Here is my reply to James on Corral FYI..
James is mostly correct. I had another engine assembled by Chris Kaiser at LMS in Las Vegas. He built it and sent it to me. I took it to Fox lake to have the heads redone, and get a second opinion of why it was so hard to turn over. While they were looking at it they noticed that the crank was bent .005, Chris had installed a top ring that had been bent, and then rebent and still installed. Numerous other problems also arrose such as the seat pressure on the intake valves were only 35#'s the valve seals were GT seals, ect, not to mention the port work was not as well as I wanted it to be on this set of heads.
Once i found this out I told him to stop what he was doing on this engine and send me all the parts. He was ready to assemble it. He assured me that he would refund me 1500$ and give me back all of my parts. He has not done this yet (10+ months later and will not return my calls or emails, ect). Nonethe-less I was stuck with an engien that had all the machine work done to it but needed assembled.
I had heard good things about Hensler Racing, and after having very bad experiences with Fox lake building my engines and having a couple bearings spin, I thought that james had to be able to do a better job.
I contacted James and told him that I had all of the parts but needed them to be put togeather. I had brought the heads to Fox lake to get looked over and check out the valve job, flow, ect before I brought them to James. Yes the port work is not your standard Fox Lake job, but they do flow a lot better than stock, and the valve job was well done according ot FOx Lake.
I then brought all of the items to james. Told him that ALL clearances needed to be double checked. The block was deck plate honed to match the pistons already and wanted him to double check all of that as well. James assembled all of the parts, Mahley pistons/rings, manley I beam rods, i forget if they were federal bearings?, 6 bolt crank, ect. Just as the auction described it. Hensler did build the shortblock.
He also put hte heads on and timed the cams, just like he does with the rest of his engines. The only difference is that he did not use fox lake ported heads, rather than heads that were already ported.
How I was supposed to make money from using henslers name is beyond me. I sold the engine today for 3750$. I gurantee I lost money on the deal, but that is how it goes when you build this sort of stuff, and I know that.
Here is a quick price breakdown of the parts
1300 FRPP valvetrain
1300 port/valve job/ guides
500 pistons
500 rods
250 bore/hone
250 balance
169 ARP head studs
200 head gaskets
340 SHM girdle and studs
80 bearings
800 assy hensler
+ castings, ect.
Like i said I got around 7K in it. And I sold it for half that. How that is making money blows my mind.
Unfortunatly Hensler got all wound up because I used the words built, instead of assembled. All i was trying ot do was advertise for him a little since I "think" he did a good job building it. My BAD.
