What is a dyno "tune" exactly?

Maybe not for my Mark, since it's unmodified, but what is a TUNE exactly? What do they do? Just adjust the fuel air mixtures and stuff? I have a couple cars that might benefit from a tune.

How much does this cost typically?

A/F ratios, timing, for auto trans: change shift points and trans line pressure. They can do other things like turn the fan on earlier remove speed limiter etc..

You need to pay for dyno time and the tuner, so it can be a few $100, depending on what they get for dyno time.

Yes...typically a "tune" will require someone who knows how to either program a chip while the car is on a dyno to program in certain parameters, as mentioned above.

Some dyno tuners can completely re-flash your car's computer(ECU) and not use a physical "plug-in" computer chip.

The "tuner" is a person who operates a remote calibration computer that will "tap in" to your car's pre-existing factory computer settings, and modify them in a beneficial way so you have the exact settings YOU want, and the car will be tuned via its sensors to run as efficiently as possible with the new settings.

some typic changes from the facotry would be:
remove top speed limiter
firm up shifts(lose the mushy feeling between shifts)
better air/fuel mapping under WOT(wide open throttle)
aux cooling fan to come on full power sooner(keeps engine temps down)
advanced ignition timing(more horsepower)
better fuel economy at part throttle

FYI, if you dont think you will benefit from a dyno-tune, you do have the other option of buying a simple plug-in chip that already has most of these settings programmed into it, in a "generic" fashion(as opposed to a perfect match for your specific vehicle based on info drawn from a dyno session). For example, a basic chip might increase your fuel mixture to a richer condition based on fuel delivery settings, or additional bolt-on midifications such as Nitrous, or forced induction(blower/super-charger), where as a complete dyno-tune can calibrate each level of fuel mapping in ALL throttle positions for the ultimate, and most efficient settings, again, all learned from the dyno.

let me put it this way...when you run fast on foot, your right foot slams the ground harder than your left, and lifts slower. A chip would add more cushion to your shoe to soften the blow, and perhaps lighten the shoe so it lifts faster. A dyno-tune would custom design this shoe for the ultimate in comfort, add a spring to promote faster lift, as well as other features to make this right step work as efficiently as the left.(man, these analogies I come up with are whacked, arent they?)

hope this helps.

Chip's are around $250 to $300 i think, a dyno tune is typicaly more then that because you have to pay the tuner and for dyno time. It has been a while since i had this done, but i been looking for my Vette and they are about $500 for a dyno tune.
