Can't get traction!

Hey guys, I need some help here. I went to the track the other night and kept burning out my tires in 1st gear. I tried easing into the throttle as well and it didn't help. I have brand new Yokohoma 245 ES100 on the back so I don't know what the problem is. Tire pressure is 32 on all 4 tires. I tried flooring it a couple times today on the street and the same thing happens every single time: the tires go up in smoke. If I turn on the traction control the tires grip good but I wasn't smart enough to do that at the track.

RE: Can't get traction!

Try setting the pressure around 22psi. If you still get spin, keep lowering it until you don't. If you can't stop them from spinning, you need designated track tires (drag radials). Good luck. With 32 psi, I doubt you'll ever hook up. That's WAY too much pressure.

Will BFG drag radials 255/50/16 fit alright?

Yes.

RE: Can't get traction!

I ran again tonight at the track with 26lbs in the rear tires, 40 in the front. Still couldn't get traction. 1st run of the night with exhaust closed I ran a 15.0 with a 2.4 60 foot time. Soon as I opened the cutouts I smoked the tires off the line. All the next runs I ran with traction control on which fixed the traction problem but made me bog so I was doing 2.6-2.7 60 foot times but still running very consistant 15.0 . I wish I would have got drag radials instead of these Yokohamas...

RE: Can't get traction!

Well one out of three different things are happening.
1. Your tires suck
Fix: get new ones

2. You track is not prepped well
Fix: bitch and complain until they put some VHT down

3. You are not a very good driver.

Fix: Learn how to drive a little better. i.e. do not just mash the hell out of the gas right off the line. If you keep loosing traction try to do something about it, not just try the same thing over and over again wasting your time. Try to give it enough throttle to get off the line and NOT spin the tires. Rapid adaptability and oposable thumbs seperate us from the dumber creatures of the world. We use the thumbs to hold the steering wheel...

RE: Can't get traction!

It's definately not my driving, with over 60 passes at the dragstrip I have some experience in that regard. I am starting to think I have a bent halfshaft or something?

RE: Can't get traction!

halfshafts don't bend. and 60 passes is nothing. i've made way more than that in the last year and i'm still not the best driver.

RE: Can't get traction!

It's not like we are driving a manual here folks. Driving a 4r70w is not rocket science. Obviously I have tried to adjust how I launch the car but with no success. I have tried a variety of techniques and it hasn't helped. Getting 250rwhp to 1 wheel is not easy. The thing is, I have always been able to do decent 60 foot times on Kumhos but ever since I got these ES100's I can't get traction at all with traction control off. This doesn't make sense since my new tires are supposed to be way better than HR rated Kumho Ecstas.

Is this your tire? Different aspects of a tire do differentthings. For example, the tire you just bought has a very stiff sidewall, which is excellent for handling. When you go around a corner, the sidewall will ot collapse, and the car will not roll. However, a stiff sidewall will kill traction. When you have alot of power, the tire needs to have a little give in the sidewall (softer rubber). Tires that are good for traction genereally kill handling, and vice versa. If you wanted a tire for traction off the line, you bought the wrong ones.

On another note, you asked a question, and people are answering it. Don't insult the people you want help from, or we won't do it anymore.

RE: Can't get traction!

I wasn't trying to insult anyone, I just get a little defensive when people question my driving ability. Thanks for the help.

RE: Can't get traction!

FWIW, Michelin Pilots have extraordinary dry traction for an all season radial. I don't think traction ratings(UTOG?) are valid between different manufacturers.

Getting 250rwhp to 1 wheel is not easy. The single biggest cure for that is obviously a traction-lock differential.
