Funny thing happened on the way to buy a Mark VIII

Strange how things work out. I made a plan today to drive about 45 miles to go see a used 93 Mark VIII belonging to a member of this site. It has 3.73's, chip, exhaust, new front struts, and new tires.

My GF and I are starting to look for another mark VIII, and since this guy's price was right, I decided to go see the car.

Since it has more miles on it than we were interested in(166k), her brother decided to come with me instead. he has always wanted a Mark VIII sice he drove mine when I bought it last year. He prefers a higher mileage model since he owns a shop, and can fix whatever it needs, and save on the price of the car.

So, today, on our way out of town, he tells me he really wants a black one, would settle for the tri-coat white/pearl(like the one we are going to see). But if he had to choose another color besides black, it would be Red Garnet Glaze.

We decided to take the long way, so I could open up my car on a nice country road.
Suddenly, half way there, we spot a Red Garnet Glaze Mark VIII sitting in a field...with a huge FOR SALE sign on it. What are the odds???

I yank a U-turn, and head back to see the car. It is a 93, with snowflakes, and dirty from head to toe. The bumper chrome was still "chrome", and the rear window had barely a trace of ripple, so I knew it was garaged. I peek in the window, and it has a black interior in great shape, and 118k on the clicker. Not too bad looking for a 93 with 118k. In fact, it was pretty damn sharp.

So, we call the number on the sign. It is the original owner. he just bought a '03 Lincoln, and decided to just park it with a sign...YESTERDAY!!!

We told him we were on our way to see another Mark VIII, and we'd call him right back.

Not wanting to flake, we go see the car we originally set out to see. This guy wanted $3700, and the red one wanted $4k, but would take $3500 CASH today. We saw the white one. It was a dealer optioned Gold package...and it was a decent car, well worth the money, but just not what my buddy was looking for.

We call the owner of the red one back, and agree to meet with him on our way home.

Here's the skinny on the red Mark VIII. 12/92 production date, new tires, every option available(except phone, but I dont even know if they offered a phone in 93?). We fired it up, and headed for the open road. What a cream puff. Not a hint of vibration at 100 mph, ice cold A/C, clean interior, and the color my buddy liked.

We paid the man, and headed home. As soon as we got home, my GF was there in her 95, and loved the car. My buddy was beside himself. I couldnt believe the odds of finding this car. Turns out, my buddy has worked on other vehicles belonging to the owner of the Mark VIII. Small world, I tell ya.

In the glove box was the original owners manual booklet, with warranty card, and the WINDOW STICKER!!! $40,751.50

So, as soon as he would close the sunroof, roll up the windows, and get out, I had a hose on it. I washed it, hand waxed it, cleaned the rims, and polished out the near yellow headlights.

here's the "before" pic. Notice the dull mark on the right side of the hood. Its gone NOW!

Then, after a couple hours, some 3M hand finesse-it, and some McGuire's yellow wax, here's the after shots.

I wiped down the interior, and gave the black leather a fresh feeding of lexol, and it is back to its pristine condition.
I am pretty glad he found this car, and bought it. It pulls like a champ, and now looks the part. He is getting the windows tinted tomorrow.

Thanks for reading. I am amazed at how destiny works sometimes. We shouldnt have been on that road, and we just happened to stumble across a car that suits him perfectly. It was a good day.
