I Blew A... Spark Plug! I Need Some Top Engine Parts...

I have a 96 Mark 8 & a spark plug that wasn't properly tightened (not by me) shot out of the socket while I was doing 65mph on the highway. The pressure of the shooting spark plug broke some parts above it & I need to replace them. The timing for this to happen is really bad but I need the car to get to work. I need the front & rear 'beauty' covers, the intake 'elephant ear' silencer & the spark plug wire cover. I've attached pictures of the parts & the damage has been circled in red. Please send me a message if you have engine parts. Thank you! ;(

Did the spark plug just thread right back into the hole?

I've heard of spark plugs blowing out and taking the threads with them, but not very much on these heads.

You can drive around without the parts you circled. I'd toss the "elephant ear" and put a rubber cap over the intake tube where it came off. The spark plug cover can be put back together with some epoxy putty. And you can get to work without the beauty cover, at least until you can find a nice one to put back on. I took mine off when i had a '94 and never put it back on.

Looks like all you really need is a spark plug wire. They're like $100 for the set at autozone.

You might need to helicoil the head, though, which would be significantly more work.

Google "timesert"...

and find a reputable mechanic familiar with using them. It can be done without pulling the head but you have to be good.

None of the other parts are critical except the spark plug wires which look stock and probably need replaced anyways.

Even the plug cover is unecessary. But if you must have one I think I have a pair in storage. PM me if you're interested.

RE: I Blew A... Spark Plug! I Need Some Top Engine Parts...

I may have dodged a bullet. The mechanic looked in there with a flashlight & said that it appears that only the top couple of threads are stripped. I don't understand the "top" part but he's the mechanic. He said that he's going to try rethreading them.

I still need a good deal on the front & rear beauty covers, 'elephant ear' silencer intake tube & spark plug wire lid. I may be wrong in the description but the pictures show what I mean.

Thanks again everyone...

Considering there are only 4 threads in that hole, I would be leary about "just the top couple" being missing.

When/IF you look at that kit I used, they have
1. the stock sized insert with 4 threads
2. a double sized that has twice as many thread, which is the one I used.

Good luck with it, let us know if you get the plug to stay in the hole.

I was just about to voice the same concern.

Yep, it turns out that it only has a few threads so it was going to need either the timesert or heli-coil. The mechanic has both & suggested timesert. I agreed (the coil didn't look too promising) & the car is now running like a champ again. Thanks!

Glad to hear you got it taken care of! :)

I was supposed to do that?

I'm kidding! Yes, the mechanic pulled all the spark plugs & replaced them.
