5 x 4.25 to 5 x 4.5 spacers, think it will work?

In an attempt to (cheaply) be able to use Mustang wheels on the Mark VII, I bought a set of 1" 5x4.25 to 5x4.50 spacers. My friend (and forum member) Astrocoop has agreed to let me use his extra set of Mustang wheels ('03 Anniversary Cobra wheels) from his '04 Mach 1 till I get some different wheels. Anyway his wheels are 17 x 9's with 275/40/17's. The wheels are 26mm offset and the spacers are 1" or 25mm. I'm figuring his 26mm offset wheels plus another 25mm equates to 51mm and according to the several offset calculators on the internet this should clear just right IF I'm figuring this out right. Anyone else using spacers and with what results?.

I personally find the brakes on the stock Mark VIII to be perfectly adequate so I dont wish to go through the trouble and expense of putting on Mustang rotors/hubs/calipers and I think getting a machine shop to drill out the existing rotors to 4.50 everytime I need rotors would be a PITA. I have found some decent wheels for the stock bolt pattern but usually they are not that wide and really prefer the wheels available for the Mustang. Think this will work?.

1" spacer puts you at zero offset with 26mm wheel. It will look stupid for the lack of better work. The wheels will come out 2.5" more than stock wheels.

Been there done that! Except I did the opposite of you. I "set" the 99 Cobra rims I had up next to my car with a 1 1/2" space(to compensate for the width of the spacers) between the hub and the wheel in the back of the car. I than stepped about 15 feet behind my car, took a look, and said WTF and laughed my a** off, HAHA. I than proceeded to install the 99 Cobra brakes/hubs.........

There's a saying somewhere(probably made up by someone cool like me, hehe)...."Do it RIGHT, or don't do it AT ALL!". Remember, this isn't some POS Honda that you're trying to jimmy rig everything on it. If you want to go "cheap" your probably shouldn't do it, that is unless you're going to install a cool spoiler next, and some chrome fenderwell strips, and some stupid a** sticker on the front windshield.

Ever see a Mexican driving a Honda with 10" wide wire wheels? Thats what its going to look like. Get your head on straight bro! :mad-tilt:

About the brakes.......the M8 stock brakes are fine and dandy for the 16" rims you have on it....put some 17/18" or bigger and have fun stopping it! Can you say 2 brake jobs a year?

Ok.....I'm going to say this in the NICEST way possible.....If you DO install these spacers....PLEASE post pictures...............so we can point and laugh, LOL.

Just looking out for you Destroyer...do us right and do IT right! :)

Here is some reading info to coherse you to the LIGHT! http://www.anti-rice.com/

Why would larger wheels make stopping more difficult?

Ok, so I figured something wrong it seems. I figured since the Mustang wheel is 26mm and the spacer is 25mm, this equaled out to 51mm vs the 39 mm stock M8 wheels are. If the wheels with spacers were 51mm it should all work out fine with only 13mm or so extra width from the outside. Srew it, I'll wait till the spacers come in and try it out. I'll post pics for you guys to laugh at.

My math might be off, but I think the spacer offset you are talking about is considered negative...-25 mm offset. The spacer would put you at 1 mm offset on a Mustang and 14mm offset on a Mark.

Your math must be close or right because Jeremi got 0(Zero) offset.

Why would larger wheels make stopping more difficult?

Heavier rotating mass, different weight ratio to turning speed, more centrifical force, more momentum when trying to stop due to the heavier wheel. More rim, less Tire equals more weight to stop or a different "weight/turning ratio". I can't think of the term, but I hit it in there somewhere, haha.

Stock Mustang alloys are kinda light, Max's aftermarket wheels are freaken heavy as hell! 50lbs a rim/tire?!

Destroyer....we'll be laughing WITH you not at you because I know you'll be laughing too :)

It won't be more rotating mass with lighter rims. I'm sure the 04 10th anniv. Cobra rims at 26lbs are lighter that the stockers. We'll have to see how it looks.

Ofcourse. But like I said....bigger rims with more rotating mass will need better brakes. I was merely pointing out that the stock brakes wouldn't be good enough with bigger rims.

Every drive a Tahoe/Escalade with 22/24/26" rims and stock brakes? I have.....and it resembled my 67 chevy truck with drum brakes in the front. Scary. Also....you drive my car, and than drive Max's car it will be a night and day difference. Same exact brakes(different hydraulics I think) but my car stops with ease and his feels like its a truck and more pedal effort is needed.

I here what your saying. When I put the 18's on the stang, there needs to be a little more pedal effort to slow down.

Well damnit, didn't get the spacers yet but I found an offset calculator that takes the spacer into consideration and it looks like you guys are right. 1mm offset is all I would end up with which means they would stick out 2.5" more than the stock wheels (as stated by one of you). '05-07 Mustang wheels have 46mm offset though, some newer Lincoln LS have up to 60mm offset and the 4.50 bolt pattern so all is not lost. I'll just have to find something with more offset. Think a 46mm offset would work alright (well, minus the 25mm for the spacer, so 21mm)?. I'll still try Astrocoops wheels on for ****s and giggles though. I know I 'll probably do the Cobra brake/hub conversion in the end.

LMAO...trial and error! hehe

You've already commited, so try the 04's and see how it looks :)
Wont be getting the spacers till Monday but I think I have this whole offset thing figured out (finally). The '07 Mustangs (some of them) have 18 x 8.5 inch polished Bullit style wheels with a 50mm offset. When you take into account the spacers are 25mm, this should still leave me with a 25mm offset. Calculators say that they will only stick out 19mm or .7" which might look pretty good, especially out back. What do you think?.

May not be too bad, 18s would look nice :) Butttt...........we don't know what your car looks like so if its PINK it probably won't matter what rims you put on it.

Its the dark jewel green. I personally dont like it but I figured its ok for the price I paid for the car and the mileage.

I personally like the deep jewel green.:big-grin:

And I've seen a few with different wheels and they look great!
