I'm thinking of upgrading my exhaust

I was kind of looking for a low, throaty type sound, nothing too obnoxious, I kinda like how mustangs always sounded. Since its pretty much the same engine (so I have been told) would flowmasters sound the same? Or is there a better brand? Also, how much of the system would I have to replace to get a good system? Its a 97 Mark VII generation 1 btw.

Cat-back 2-1/2" duals with Magnaflow 2-in, 2-out resonator or X-pipe with Magnaflow or Dynomax full flow mufflers and tips of your choice. Flowmasters on a Mark VIII do not sound good IMHO.

looks great, thanks for the pics and links, how much does that cost? im looking for "not-too-expensive"

Well... By asking that question, I will say that I have invested more in my headers & exhaust than most people will pay for a nice gen1 Mark. If that is in your budget, I can hook you up with IMHO, the best in the business :)

Although, the sound you are looking for, and what JP has suggested, with crush bent aluminum pipe can be done for less than $1k at most shops, and much less if you DIY.

yes I will definitely be doing it myself, I basically just need to afford the pipes

If you want to go "cheap" and "easy"(haha) you can just remove the resonator, and muffs, and than install straight pipes. I LOVED the way it sounded, and it have less drone than Max's M8 WITH Bullet style mufflers. Cost me 40 bucks at the local exhaust shop. I have since installed headers/3" cats/E-Cutouts/True Duals, but when I had NO muffs it sounded great.

Also...I had "punched" out the 3rd cat, and I still have the body of it if you're interested in loosing it but still keeping it visually functional, i.e. inspections.

Honestly....its a cheap route to go, and if you decide you don't like it, you didn't just pay $200 for mufflers that sound like crap.

If you have a sawsall, just chop off the muffs and drive it around....see how you like it. It will sound more raspy than with some nice tips installed, but you'll get the jist of it.

for a quick and hidden exhaust in a gen 1 do what i did. i took my stock exhaust off right behind the "Y" pipe and clamped a single 2-1/4 flowmaster on then put a 90* bent pipe that i got from discount and a 18" peice of pipe to get it to the pinch weld. that set up has a very diffrent sound to it. best of all its hidden there are no visable tips or pipes unless you are in a lowrider driving behind me or you lay down and look for it. there is a peice of metal there that is trying to be a cross member that is my exhaust mount the exhaust pipe is just setting on this metel. if it rattles on the bar just bend the bar up a little like i had to do.

the i still have all 3 of my cats on there so the sniffer will never know its not stock. granted all 3 of my cats are punched out they are still there. so you can do what i did just not punch them out. i did not cut anything on the stock exhaust at all i just took the exhaust off behind the 3rd cat/"Y" pipe and clmped my muffler on the back of the 3rd cat.

when i did this i dropped about 2-3 theths from my 1/8th mile time and picked up about 1 or 1.5 MPH by just doing my exhaust.

hows this for an inexpensive idea, get flowmaster muffler, bore out my catalytic converter and leave everything else? I don't want something too loud ( a mistake I made with my motorcycle ) I just want something a little more something, and I like how the mustangs sound

that would work punch out all 3 cats as long as the emissions will let you cut off your stock mufflers and put 2 flowmasters on where they came off. simple cheep and easy. should take a exhaust shop about 30-45 min to do maybe less cuz there will be no pipe to bend.
