Fuel pump replacement

When I had my mechanic Norm install my driveshaft,I also had him replace the fuel pump to avoid failure of pump due to age.I dont know what went wrong?I tried to get him to order a walbro unit from Fuel-pumps.net but I think he got some kind of modular unit (fuel pump/tank level sending unit)
from motorcraft.It was really expensive!!
I was under the impression that my fuel pump swap would be an easy job
for him to perform. Why the expense?cant just the pump be swapped?
Need technical advice
Thanks all

Yes, the pump can be replaced without replacing everything else.

Is it too late to return the Motorcraft unit?

Fuel pump swap

Fuel pump swap

Yeah, way too late and a lot more than I intended to spend.
Tell everyone I said thanks for the omission of data I needed.

Perhaps the mechanic used the model listings and determined only the Motorcraft fuel pump was useable on a Mark VIII as I do not believe the Walbro is listed anywhere as a direct replacement for the Mark VIII. Mustang, yes, Lincoln, no.

Good point JP. The mechanic might have been concerned with warranty issues too.

I don't take my cars to a mechanic very often (tires and alignments when needed) but if I paid someone to install parts in my car, I would want the parts that I asked for, installed.

Norm the not my mechanic anymore

Good point men.As of today he is fired,I can not afford to employ someone
who cannot make rational decisions.

It has been said many times in many fuel pump threads that
"YOU DO NOT NEED THE ENTIRE ASSEMBLY"... ONLY THE FUEL PUMP.

the first time I did a fuel pump I replaced the entire assembly, because I didn't know what I was "up against" when I got inside the tank.

AFTER seeing the assembly and noting the pump itself was replaceable by itself.. I regretted spending well over 300.00 for the entire assembly.

It's been said, over and over and over since then.....in many threads.

Thanks Driller, Now it's whether I am up to this JOB... Uhm hello? Mr Wallet?

It's really not a bad/hard job...

at 150,000 miles mine died at the dragstrip..

We left the car there, and got a pump and returned and changed the pump in the pits at the track..

For a first timer, it'll probably take 4ish hours.

my second time to change the pump only took 2 hours.

It's really not that bad once you get the hang of it.

Well, I still need to narrow down what is wrong with my MKVIII.
It will crank but not start.
Checked fuel line at the filter head, got fuel.
I believe the pump is working because when I turn on the key, I hear the clunk-clunk from there.

Any more suggestions?

Do you have spark?

Tiffs car had a no start problem and we replaced the cam sensor and the crank sensor and it turned out to be the VCRM {varible control relay module) located behind the grill inside the front bumper cover.

I would rule out a spark issue before I decided to replace the fuel pump.
BUT.. the fuel pump should NOT be making a "clunk-clunk".

Do we have a spot on tis site where all this info is a vailable?
I did have to replace the grill and we all know what that intails, but that was a couple months ago... I would like to try the (ABCDEFG) module...LOL, to see if I have spark still but I don't know what it looks like.

Thank you.

If you have spark and fuel, it's not the VCRM.

Now your next step is to find out if you have actually "enough fuel pressure".
Just the presence of fuel doesnt mean the fuel pump isn't the problem.

ALSO.. once again.. the fuel pump should NOT make a "clunk-clunk" sound.

You need to get a fuel pressure gauge on the car connected to the schrader(valve stem) on the fuel rail.

You should have between 39-40PSI with the vaccum line disconnected from the fuel pressure regulator.

Ok, I found a Walbro pump for under $80 "NEW".
I still don't know what the VCRM looks like....

I could always guess and wiggle some wires around. :roll_over:

This is a vcrm for a 97 model

note the F7 at the beginning of the ford part number, F7=97 F3=93

You are the MAN....! (if you are a man, if you're a woman, just put the "WO" in front:) )

What does the other side look like?
Wait! Are you Mopar68 on ebay?

I got a rear air shock from Mopar68.

Anyways, thank you.

the other side looks almost the same as this side.

it's located on the center bar in front of your ac condensor underneath the grille.

If you look thru the hood latch hole, from under the hood.. you might be able to catch a glimpse of it.

might be able to see it from underneath the car looking thru the square holes in the bottom of the bumper cover.

It's right beside/underneath the power steering cooler {the finned thing that will cut your arm/hand when you try to removed the VCRM)
