new tire advice needed

Well, my son's got summer tires and winter tires (my bad, I really thought we were getting all seasons), and sure he loves them. But we only have so much room and money for all of us to be running different tires, and then around here there's the big question on when it's time to change over. It never fails after the Kid changes to his summer tires, he needs to use my car one or two more times.

Smart Kid!!!

What was NOT in my budget was new brakes though... I kinda had a feeling I'd need them soon, but the tire guy called me at work and told me they were down to 10% all around, so there went another $400. Ouch!

I hope it's not true in your case, but my son took his car in for tires and they told him he needed brakes( I forget what they quoted him). He knew I could do the job, so he said no thanks. The next weekend we bought all the parts and went to work. ALL FOUR WERE LIKE NEW! Won't go to that shop again.

Oh, that's a good point. I wouldn't trust a tire shop to do my brakes anyway, I barely trust them to do the wheels right and not scratch up/mess up the rims or car.

My brakes were squealing like crazy whenever I applied them. After I got the new ones, I noticed a huge difference in my stopping ability. I was pretty sure going in that I'd need them. I didn't mention it to the tire guy, I was kinda hoping he'd catch it, which he did.

The place I took the car to has half the shop dedicated to tire sales, next to it is their auto repair, and behind it is used car sales. It ecompasses 1 downtown city block, conveniently located just 3 blocks from where I work, so I didn't have to get a ride from anyone or take any time off work. It's also a local place, not a big chain store, I prefer to patronize locals as much as possible.

I'm sure I got semi-screwed on the price, but I'm confident they did a good job.
