Heater

As fall approaches I notice my heater is not putting out warm air. The temp guage shows that the water temp is warming up proberly. The blower works and the AC works great. The selector moves the air between vents and defroster just fine. The floor vent doesn't work, but whose does anymore? The car is a '97 Mark VIII with 120K miles. Is this something that normally goes out about this time? Is it something I can fix? I know which end of a screwdriver is the important one and I have worked on other cars, but I am currently living in a house with no carport nor garage. So, any job has to be one that can be wrapped up easily.

Well Bill, I am not a total expert , but I would suggest that you have the problem that effects most Gen ll owners. It is the Blend Door issue. It is a piece that fails and creates the problems you are having, Do a search under the Blend door and you should learn of your new adventure.

Thanks for the input. Let me make sure I understand completely. My car has never (since I have owned it) discharged any air flow from the floor vent. While that is bothersome, it is something I can live with. This new problem is that no warm air comes from any vent nor defroster. I thought the blend door was just a diverter of air to the floor vent. But, you three seem to be in agreement that it actually changes the temp of the air. Is this correct?

It is the "mixing" valve for the air that comes out your vents. It takes the warm air AND the cool air and mixes it to the temp set on your climate control. It has broken to only allow cold air to come out the vents.

No air coming out the knee/foot vents is another problem altogether. Hopefully some one that knows the answer to that one will chime in.

Most likely an issue with the floor/defrost door vacuum motor or vacuum line(s).

Okay. Sounds like I have 2 issues. Are the solutions in the same location? After I disable my car for a day (or 2 or 3) in someone's garage I can fix the blend door. I have a capable helper that has experience taking apart and putting together cars. Will the potential vacuum line be found in the same underdash location as the blend door? Or is this something I will search for under the hood? Thanks. You guys are great.

I'm not sure how the 97s differ from the Gen1s, but the vacuum motors will be under/behind the dash.
