Almost got smoked by a CIVIC!!!!

Well I am quick to admit defeat and call out a situation for what it really was...

I was on the freeway... I passed an earlier gen CIVIC hatchback that was lowered, and had different (small nice rims on it) as well as different lights etc...

All the sudden he merges right behind me... and flashes his lights... then he pulls up next to me and looks over... I nod... and chuckle... haha

So I put the Vette into 3rd which was a mistake since I should have used 2nd...

I pulled from 3000 rpms until 5600 rpms or 115mph

He was lined up with my bumper until 4700 rpms or 85-90mph or so... WOW!!!

I heard his crazy turbo spool and his blow off valve during shifts...

By 110 I had about 1-2 car lengths on him... he hit the brakes... and flashed his highs...

I slow down to 70... he pulls up next to me and gives me the thumbs up and I do the same.

WOW!!! That was a close one... that thing pulled harder than the M3 I raced prior.

this is what it pretty much looked like...

Wonder if there is a post somewhere on the Civic forums about me now hahaha.

hahahaha whaaaat!!! There was a Civic that looked just like that at the track with me a few weeks ago, that sounded like hot *bleep* but was running 18s.

Seriously, though, it's ashame that you couldn't get him to pull off the highway so that you could ask him what he had done to it.

Yeah, you got that right, but still... a HONDA? My LUG NUTS need more torque than a Honda makes. And I mean, besides, Civics only come in I4 models, and if it's the size that he posted above, he could maybe fit a V6 in there with the help of an industrial-strength shoehorn, but still... how can you match a modded Z06 in power with a 6cyl Honda?

But then again, a friend of mine drives a 6cyl Prelude that's running 10s... so I retract my statement. haha

Even though I'm a big fan of American cars and more or less wouldn't buy anything else... if I knew what I was doing, I would buy a Civic SI if I could have it pushing 400+hp.

Most of y'all have probably seen this, but in case you haven't:

I am sure he probably had as much money in his car or maybe even more than what I have in mine :D.

Still what a sleeper though.

A lot of those imports are set up and geared for the ¼ mile etc. Chances are when you started going over 110 that you would have kept pulling on him. They give every thing they got down low for street light races and highway pulls from 50 to a 100 like you did as well for the 1/8 and ¼ mile track. Then they are out of steam after that.

I would have pulled much harder if I shifted into 2nd and had the car around 4000-4500rpms.

The main thing that shocked me how fast a dang civic was... I mean it is a 10 second 0-60 car from the factory... runing 17s through the 1/4 this guy must have done some crazy things to make it as fast as it was...

I started pulling pretty hard above 100 as you said Steve... this is why he hit the brakes and gave me the thumbs ;)

i see some of these guys run low 13s high 12s in the 1/4, but like i said right after they cross the line they are done, they are out of RPMs. So it is a combo of turbos, bolt-ons, maybe NOS and the big bang for the buck gearing.
Was he shifting a lot during you run?

At least once... my car is pretty loud too so it is hard to hear... I just did a complete pull in 3rd. I only shifted out of 6th into 3rd when we first went...

Then I heard him make a shift almost immeadeatly... and afterwards he was kind of a bit behind me so I couldn't hear his blow off valve go off...

All this talk about Hondas is making me want to finally get around to selling my other Mark VIII and putting the money into an old(er) model Civic with some spending cash left over for some mods. Gotta say that I'd rather have a Civic sleeper than a Lincoln sleeper... haha

Clearly, you never had a REAL lincoln sleeper or your wouldn't be saying that. :fart

That very feeling is what kept me around these cars for so long. Make some power with a lincoln and everyday is a fun filled day IMO.

+1

It doesn't take C5 corvette money to make a Civic run 12s.

I have never seen Honda guys change thiner gearing, they buy a manual trans civic, drop in a decent motor, add a turbo, and then try to get it to hook up. Maybe some spray to spool but usually not.

How much money does it take to make a civic run in the 12s... realistically? While avoiding the smog nazis in california?! I betchya it is a whole lot...

Might not get you to 12s but it'll be as fast as a 12s car from a roll.
Civic - $1000
B18/B20 - $700
B18 Conversion - $? (Not real sure on this, I'll guess around $300, very common swap.)
Turbo kit - $1100 (Such a common swap they make off the shelf turbo ktis for them cheap)
Exhaust - $100
Fuel Upgrades - $300
Tuning - $600-800
Suspension - $500
Wheel/Tires - $1000
Then just lighten the car as much as you can.

As far as the Smog Nazis, you're not going to obviously.

How are you going to spend $100 on exhaust? and $1000 on a civic??

A decent hatch that hasn't been smashed into a wall and has all it's body panels is about $2500-3500 at the very least... if you want a body with low miles and nice paint it will be at least 5k...

There is always the clutch/tranny... not mentioned and other things (like better brakes)... all in all I would think that it would take at least 10k... to run 13s... with questionable CA smog status... that said it is a pretty good deal, now that I have done my research and those cars are probably a ton of fun to drive because they are god damn go-karts.

Yea I forgot the clutch. Most people don't build trannys from what i recall. No it doesn't take that much. I was going to build the CRX I described above when I was 16 but went with a Mustang and eventually a Mark VIII cause you could get faster times for cheaper. I recall pricing it out to around $6K. And you can find 88-91 Project Civics all the time around here for $1000. And you are going to make your own exhaust for $100. Most civic owners who have fast cars are every bit the DIYers as Mustang guys and if you're going to be putting a body kit on it and why would you spend $5000 on a car that you're not going to us the motor. Why get low miles for the same reason? I don't know too many civics with stock front bumpers or even stock most removable body panels do you?

And they aren't that fun, I have ridden in some, I would take a Supercharged Mark VIII for the same price any day. They aren't like go-carts, they're like piece of **** cars that are overpowered and don't catch traction unless its from a roll.

lol thanks for the info. I kind of always liked the 92+ civics looks wise and with the correct visual mods they looks 1/2 ways decent... the 89-01s FUGLY.. and that is saying it nicely... haha.

Mark VIII and civic hatch are comepletely different category though... if you have the need for speed I think the cheapest thing would be a 5.0 though... or a LT1 or LS1 slowmaro...

I know a guy around me who is really into hondas. His last was a civic hatch, that ran 12s on street tires. Supposedly it didnt cost him a lot as he did all the work himself. Swapped in the K20 engine/trans out of an acura, stripped the car, done. Engine and trans were stock, making like 220 crank hp, but the car was so light, he could hold his own against bikes. Never beat any that I saw, but for being a N/A 4cyl. with stock engine it was quite impressive. After seeing his I dont look at hondas the same anymore, never know which one of those little rice burners actually has some good work done to them.

A lot of people can do a lot of things a lot cheaper than you think, if they can do it themselves. It's not too terribly difficult to make a turbo car go really damn fast, if you know what you're doing. It really doesn't matter if it's a civic, a mark, a vette, or anything.

If you just want to go fast, really fast, skip the bolt ons, go straight to some boost, and learn to tune it right. That will go a long way on any motor. And be ready to blow it up, then when you do, build the motor. Not rocket science.
