An OBDII scantool...

Went to AutoZone yesterday and found an OBDII scan tool for around $150 made by Actron. I think that's a bit excessive. Does anyone here have any ideas where I can find one for a better price than that? All my testers are OBDI or EECIV.

RE: An OBDII scantool...

I have that scanner you speak of. It only pulls codes, cheapest you can get.

If you want more Get AUTOTAP its 300 bucks

RE: An OBDII scantool...

The guys there said it can and will erase or clear memory codes too. Not just scan/read them.

RE: An OBDII scantool...

Is this enough interest to do a group purchase of the AutoTap product?

Per this link:

It appears the price could be drive down a good bit.

It would be nice but I believe it for 96 and newer vehicles :(.

RE: An OBDII scantool...

Scott Miller, (avu3), has the system from www.obd-2.com , and has pulled codes for me twice with it. Like Autotap, it runs on a PC/laptop, but at $122 with cable, it's likely not as comprehensive as Autotap. Regardless, I ordered one myself - 'should be here Tuesday.

Besides all the generic OBD-II codes, it pulls Ford specific ones. It also gives a plain English readout of what the codes mean as it pulls them. It also does a complete running test of some ~ 50 other parameters, (pass/fail, including actual measurements vs.limits), but I haven't gotten into deciphering those yet. You can save a complete log of everything recorded, and it also has a "dashboard" screen for certain readouts, which can even be used while driving. And I just inherited a nice LITTLE 266mhz Toshiba Portege 3010CT laptop - perfect for this!

Another code reader itself to check is the Equus 3100, usually available for under $150. It's at www.iequus.com but the site appears down this evening - it was up yesterday. It also has extensive Ford special code capabilities.

And remember - Mark VIIIs didn't get OBD-II until '96.

I didn't realize these were out there. Can you tune on the fly? Or do you have to program it after you run it? Is there anything like that for us gen 1 guys and gals? Now all I need is a laptop!

RE: An OBDII scantool...

Jason - these programs won't tune a car - they're just for scanning codes and doing diagnostics. There IS a system called the Tweecer( www.tweecer.com ), that DOES allow you to tune the car, but I don't know if it also does diagnostics. There are also other similar products out there, both for EEC-IV, ('93-'95), and EEC-V, ('96-'98). These are usually quite a bit more expensive than plain diagnostics scanners, since they include programming hardware.
