Aux. power source question.

I'd like to add an additional cig. lighter into my console to power my portable mp3 player's converter plug. It's power needs to be controlled by the ignition switch, rather than be constantly "hot" like the stock lighter. I know that the circuitry on our Marks can be quite sensitive, and I really don't want to screw it up. Can any of my fellow LODers suggest an easily accessable circuit that it would be SAFE to tap into? Draw of the converter is less than an amp.
Thanks,

RE: Aux. power source question.

I had that problem with my Radar... I hated having to plug it out EVERY time I turned me ignition off, so I just tapped to the rearview mirror power source. Sorry I cant be much help.. good Luck.

RE: Aux. power source question.

Well, you could splice into any ignition hot wire (there's one for the stock radio, which is probably the closest to the console) and then run that to a relay. For the power to the relay, just tap into the existing cigarette lighter power. Then you hook the new cig lighter (or you could hard wire the adapter too if you wanted) to the relay.

That makes sense, right? I've never actually used a relay before, so maybe someone can correct what I wrote, or give more detail. But I think something along those lines would work.

RE: Aux. power source question.

Thanks fellas, I think that the radio circuit would be the place to tap in. Does anyone out there know the color codes for it's power and ground wires?

RE: Aux. power source question.

LG/P: 12V
W/P: 12v ACC
BK/LG: Ground

Test these before connecting. This is coming out of my 1993 EVTM manual, Premium Radio. The JBL radio looks like it has 2 W/P leads. You'd have to consult a manual if that's what you have, or put a meter on the leads.

Thanks Kale, I'll give those circuits a try over the weekend and let you know how I made out.
