Best option for new exhaust

I am going to put new exhaust on my stock 1993 Mark. Any good suggestions? I'm 18 and this is going to be my muscle car.

I am looking at headers, no cats (if i can get away with it), x-pipe, duals, and Geno's mufflers.

Does this sound like a good setup?

Are the headers a waste of $750?

Thanks,
BEN

Headers aren't a waste, but you'll need to replace the steering joint for clearance.

RE: Best option for new exhaust

I would advise you to consider some other mods first before jumping into redoing your whole exhaust system. Have you J-modded your tranny, have you considered new rear gears and traction-Lok, and one item at the top of the list would be an SCT chip and a good dyno tune to go with it. That should all melt a decent size hole in your pocket and give you some real performance enhancements that you will really notice, and improve the overall driveability of your car. Not trying to be negative, but you asked for opinions.:D

RE: Best option for new exhaust

I did ask for opinions and I thanks everyone for them!

Please explain Track-Loc?

I plan on putting a Supercharger on it in the near future, so if anyone has done this please give me some hands on info. I would like to do it myself, but it may to big of a job. Does anyone know what I need to couple the Supercharger with (fuel lines, icebox, bigger MAF?) thanks

RE: Best option for new exhaust

Traction Loc (Posi-traction) no more one leggers. If you are going the super charger route then you will need to do all those mods anyhow, and then some more. Mad 1st Gen has a set of headers for sale that would be perfect for the SC route, and at a nice savings as well. You will need to do some research around but ultimitly you will find the SC project is going to be expensive. Replace drive shaft, upgrade fuel pump, injectors etc. Then you will need to decide which type SC you want Centrifical or Twin Screw. I like a little cheese with my whine so you know which way I went, and if not here is a pic.

That is really nice. Please tell me more. I also plan on going with the twin screw. Kenny Bell came up with a new housing that is smaller better and more productive. Have you read about it? it was in this months' or last months' HOTROD mag.

Can you give me a list of what all you did to yours? you had to take the old intake off correct? Thanks

RE: Best option for new exhaust

Ken:

To go to a complete KB 2.2 L I.C. like I have is a MAJOR INVESTMENT, and is not necessary for a good running street Mark Vlll. This is not meant to be snobish, but you must know that the numbers add up qickly. The whole drive train was modified, never mind the hood costs. I did this project as a last hoorah for me,as I am a grandpa and a Mark Vlll can exemplify that, I could have bought a new Mustang GT for the same money. Know what I mean. In any event I woould be happy to share any info by PM so as not to bore some of the others on this board who know what I have already.

that sounds good. If you just want to email me my email is iowncars@yahoo.com. Thanks for the help. I plan on spending $7500 on upgrades. More is necessary.

$7500 won't cover a total KB install from where you are now.

RE: Best option for new exhaust

Please note that the following is an opinion stated strongly by a young "whipper snapper", I know old people may be offended by opinions on the internet, but fear not, you can scroll past this to avoid such an annoyance.

You guys spend crazy amounts on your car. I havent added it all up yet but with my used blower, new fuel system, complete with an Xcal2 and dyno tune I will be around $2000 +/- $150-200.

The car's not worth $7500 and for 7500 youd better have a 10 second car or you need to stop working on cheap cars and buy a freakin Cobra.

My car is supercharged:
Used Novi 1K
New 42lb injectors
New Walbro 255(selling it on ebay for a SVT Focus Pump and basket which is on its way)
Used Shurflo DIY Methanol Kit (tapped into washer resivour)
SCT Xcal 2
+ other mods unrelated to the supercharging of it.

Youre now making enough horsepower to send your rods/pistons/oil pump gears to the bottom of your oil pan. You also have an extremly unique quick car. The only other things you really need to be VERy close to an 11 second car is a converter, DRs, trans cooler, and gears.

No 16-18 year old should ahve an 11 second car. Usually a 12 second car is to much for someone our age. I say our because I am 17. If you nail it some time which you will do, the tires are spinning, rear end starts to slip, you correct, then they finally bite and you get launched sideways into someone. It happens at the drag strip, on the street, to all kinds of people. Especially people inexperienced like us.

Lastly, get a centrifugal blower. Theyre are simpler to install cheaper, more readily available, fit under the stock hood, etc. etc.

RE: Best option for new exhaust

I forgot to add this.

If I had $7500, I would do the same thing I have done, but with a built motor (pistons, rods, gears, cobra crank) + L/U 3K stall converter, built up trans, drive shaft, headers, swap in a built solid axle 8.8 w/gears, and basically have a very streetable, reliable high 10/low 11 second car.

Or I would STRONGLY consider an 03 cobra swap. The problem with both setups is the down time.

$7500 in the right places, on used parts where its ok and new parts where used isn't, will get you a very quick car.

RE: Best option for new exhaust

$2000 is on the high side for a blower only centri setup.

$7500 is on the low side for a roots type blower.

It pays to shop around.

RE: Best option for new exhaust

I'm not talking about blower only I am saying blower with all nuts and bolts and all support mods. Methanol/MAF/Xcal2/Tune/Fuel Support/Radiator Brackets/Nuts and Bolts/Fittings/Etc.

RE: Best option for new exhaust

That's exactly what I meant bud. You can't make HP with just the headunit.

RE: Best option for new exhaust

I guess I could've bought a Cobra. ;)

Somehow, I just don't think it would've been the same.

The $7500 will be going to exactly that...converter, tranny, driveshaft, rear end, engine, blower, etc, etc....

I also plan on an 11's var.

And in answer to your comment about kids our age don't need 11 sec cars, there I disagree with you. I can handle the power and drive-ability of such a car. I have driven powerful car all my driving career of 3 yrs.

AND LIKE YOU, I SIMPLY LOVE IT!!!

Thanks for the suggestions and everything, nice car!
