Bubbles in the over flow tank

When I first start the car I can take off the over flow cap and rad fluid comes out, and I can see bubbles in the tank when its running, the over flow tube has a screw in it because it looks like the fitting on the rad was broken off. does anybody know what my problem is?

RE: Bubbles in the over flow tank

That sounds at the least you need a radiator or have the one you have repaired. The small tube from the top of the radiator to the reservoir is to assure the radiator is always full of coolant by passing any air to the reservoir.

Worst case scenario would be a blown head gasket?

RE: Bubbles in the over flow tank

yea that's a typical sign of a blown head gasket. But a blown head gasket is not a typical problem on a mark 8.

You're jumping the gun again, Matt.

Some bubbling in the coolant is normal.
When are you seeing this? When the engine's at full operating temperature or when it's cold? What aspect of the bubbling has you worried?

-Are you losing coolant?
-Is the engine overheating?
-Now that the ignition problem is fixed, how does it run?
-Have you pressure tested the cooling system? (A pressure tester is ~ $50 at any auto supplier, and it's commonly used tool everyone should have anyway).
-If it's head gaskets, the exhaust will smell like burnt sugar, and if they're very bad, it'll be thick and white.
So... how's the exhaust?

Dave's right: head gasket problems in Mark VIII's are really, really rare.

Still, cooling systems with screws blocking off important tubes should get fixed!

Coolant MUST be able to circulate in and out of the reservoir. It's not just an old style "puke tank". It's an integral, sealed part of the system.

RE: Bubbles in the over flow tank

I see it first on start up, my gfs dad told me it has a blown head gasket because theres air in the system, but I dont trust him because hes "old school" pluse I dont think it would run as good as it does. Im going to fix the overflow here soon or i just might get a new rad for it because it got a little bent when the front was hit. I ran it for five min then drove it about 2 miles then let it ildle for 5 min it didnt get hot at all, No coolent is lost. Exaust doesnt have any somke and theres no water in the oil. The only time it got hot is when I drove it home from buying it, but it was running on 5 cly and the fan wasnt running. My dad says its normal for it to bubble but my gfs dad has me scared.

Don't get nervous. You do know that you have to fill these cars from the cross over pipe. If you didn't know that besure to do a search as I know there was a writeup on the procedure, as you don't want trapped air in your coolant system.

RE: Bubbles in the over flow tank

Matt, the more information you give us, the harder it becomes to believe you have a blown head gasket. In your last post, you pretty well eliminated each tell-tale symptom one at a time.

Fix the overflow bottle so the cooling system can vent/bleed itself correctly, then follow Roadboss's advice and fill the system properly to get all the air out.

One last question: you mentioned in your final post about your ignition coil that you traced and removed some B.S. add-on wire that was tapped in to force the cooling fan to run. Does the fan now run when it's supposed to (engine up to temperature and/or A/C on)?

...sure sounds like your girlfriend's dad doesn't like you!

RE: Bubbles in the over flow tank

Well I think hes right...now. Ok i got my new rad put it in, filled the coolent, it held almost 4 gallons so that tells me it was empty and thats not good. started it, ran fine, alittle water came out of the tail pipe and alittle smoke its kinda cold out so im guessing thats why I can see the exhaust. I drove it down the street and stoped to check for any leaks the car starts to run like crap and theres water still coming outa the drivers side tail pipe, drive it some more and it starts smoking and overheating. take it back home and do a carbon test and YAY! A blown head gasket!.. I brought it on my self thinking I had one then finding out I didnt now having one..
