Cat-Back

Hey, just wondering is the ART catback dual system the only one available, or are there any others out there that will work (or will work with some "persuasion"). I was thinking about trying to do it myself out of straight pipe, and angle cutting 90s and 45s, but w/o a tubing bender, I dunno if its worth the work.

RE: Cat-Back

There is NO WAY I would consider piecing together an exhaust on these cars, but with enough patience and access to a lift I suppose one could do it.

RE: Cat-Back

Dan (ART) is the only one that sells the whole exhaust pre-fabbed. Others sell components of the exhaust (Geno, Dennis, etc.), but you would need to find an exhaust shop to bend up the pipes. You would need to bring pictures of the set-up to have this done. All the aftermarket Mark VIII exhausts are similar in lay-out. (there are some exceptions to this, but for the most part they are the same) They may vary by 1 or 2 X-pipes and diameter (for high HP applications), but the basic designs are all the same.

RE: Cat-Back

I did the exhaust angle cut/reweld thing to 2.5" straight pipe on an Turbo RX-7 (Very expensive to replace: $600). It worked fine, but I used very shallow cuts (maybe 20 degrees max) to minimize cross section reduction. It was rather Ugly, but worked just fine. I'd highly recommend Dan's Pipes over any local shop job, plus the cost is very reasonable for what you get. They fit pretty good, but you'll have to cut off the stock hangers and weld them onto the new pipes, plus fabricate a few things. I tack welded them on the car (on a lift) after I aligned everything just to be sure I didn't have any rattles. Then dropped them down and welded them good. Turned out near perfect.
