Cleaning House

Ok, im starting to get that stank rotten egg smell and it feels like im constantly loosing power. I dont have the time or money to do my whole exhaust right now, but I was thinking; can I just clean out the stock cats?? Is it possible or feasible to drop the exhaust after the front two cats down a little and clean out the catalyst inside the cats and then bolt it back together? Would this throw cause all kinds of hell with the O2 sensors or throw a Check Engine light for any other reason? Any suggestions on the best way to do this would be appreciated too.

Thanks.

RE: Cleaning House

hmmm, interesting. I cant believe all of that cam out of one of those cats!! I cant wait to bust mine up!

RE: Cleaning House

anyone have a technique that they used, or should I just go at it with a hammer and a long screwdriver like I see pictured there??

RE: Cleaning House

I hollowed the third cat. I used a peice of re-bar and leather gloves...and a steel fence post saved the day. I had a really hard time getting the gauze out and the fence post did the trick.

Here are some pics. Let me know how it works to view these. I used the "post to web" function in Windows XP. I can change this if it sucks.

Thanks

Oh and click "pictures," on the left, after you open this link:

RE: Cleaning House

so did you actually take the third cat out???

Has anyone with an OBDII car done this and have you had problems with the check engine light or did it throw any codes? How do the O2 sensors react to this? Theys must try and adjust something, right??

RE: Cleaning House

Just beat the hell out of it. That is what Chris and I did on strapp's car. Get a crow bar and poke it and break it all up. Do not breathe the dust though

RE: Cleaning House

The third cat isn't actually a third cat. I think this has been discussed before. At any rate, I removed my "third cat" when I did my exhaust. No problems, no check engine light...

not so worried about the third cat (whatever it actually is..), i was wondering if he dropped the whole front of the exhaust to get to the third cat. Like I said, im not replaceing anything right now, just freeing up as much stuff as possible.
Looks like im going to drop the whole thing anyways, as all of the flange bolts are rusted to crap. Im assuming (somoeone correct me here..) that i can get these replacement flange bolts from and AutoZone or equal. Im going to replace them all just for the hell of it, might as well do it while I've got it on the lift...

Project postponed till tuesday before work....

RE: Cleaning House

Blah, Finally getting around to doing this. Going out to my recently heated garage and busting up some ceramic! Im going to replace al those bolts with some stainless hardware. Why didn't they just use that in the first place. I grabbed a nice cobalt drill bit a really long screw driver and few recipro blade, i think im going to need those too...

We'll see how it comes out...

RE: Cleaning House

I busted the hell out of some ceramic today myself.... only.... ,well different story....
