Exhaust Help!!

I recently picked up a non-LSC Mark VIII with low miles and great body.

While I would love true duals from LMS, I am looking at a less expensive way to go.

1. Cut behind the "2 into 1" converter(resonator in trashcan) and use a single 2 1/2 inch pipe down the center with 2 1/2 " tails and Magnaflows.

or,

2. cut in FRONT of the extra converter and use a "Y" pipe in it's place with the same system.

I know it's not like duals but I would expect a gain over stock and a good sound.

What do you all think?? What will it sound like with these? Would you use different mufflers??

I value your opinions!

Thanks, JOHN

thanks,

would it smell like unburnt fuel in the car like my catless Mustang does if I remove this??? Even with perfect A/F my car stinks after a log ride.

aren't the first two light off cats or are they real 3 ways?? Maybe 3 ways due to the O2 sensors???????????????

thanks, john

You have three cats with the two up front doing pretty much all the work. These two are also monitored buy the car. 93-95 have two pre-cat sensors and 96 thru 98 have four sensors. The sensors that are pre-cat (on all years) are responsible for providing feedback to the ECU to make sure fuel and air ratios are good. The two after just make sure the cats are there doing their job.

The third one is unmonitored and can go. I have read many time that even with it gone one will still pass emissions, although there is no guarantee.

If I were in your shoes I would axe everything after the primary cats. 2.5" pipe with at least one crossover will give you nice sound. Mufflers are optional :)

If sound is you primary objective, but the stock mufflers off. No joke, you gotta do it anyway, right? A few have wrote that the sound is very nice!

HAHA I've been looking for a place to use that :D

Here is what some of the members here are doing.

If you want clean "Mustang" sound...I'd suggest removing the resonator, and the muffs, and straight pipe it all. VERY cheap($50 at my shop) and you'll probably love how it sounds.

I kept the third cat for legal reasons and scrapped the resonator, went to 2-1/2" stainless pipe routed stock into 40 series Flowmasters. It sounds great when you rev it up but really doesn't have that "Mustang GT" sound. A lot of droaning inside the car. Looks very tight for a true 2-1/2" dual system. Salt Lake City has this thing with very steep entries from the road to parking lots so I'm afraid to have my exhaust too low to the ground. You could see where the stock tips were dragging. You can't even see my 2-1/2" stainless tips unless you're a few yards from the car and bent down cause they are tucked up under the bumper.

If you want the Mustang Cobra "girgle" I suggest the 2 in/out Magnaflow Cat in place of your factory third cat. Serge(46callaway) has it on his 98 and it sounds dead on like my buddies 99 Cobra with Magnaflows.

Nice and loud, deep mean sounding. Serge will have to tell you if it drones or not, but the sound is super nice, and its emissions legal.

I don't have a clip, but I just installed magnaflows on the '96 and it sounds good. I wouldn't necessarily call it a Mustang sound though.

I have less drone now than when I had stock 3rd cat/piping/dynomax bullets. I have my tips extended a good amount past the bumper which helps with reducing drone as well.

I guess I need to make cutouts in my rear bumper to extend my pipes since the terrain here in SLC is so ruthless. I suppose it gives it a better sound too, just like a trumpet or other instrument. The longer the tube, the different the sound. I don't think 4" is cuttin' it.

JP, you planning on taking the 96 back to the track soon with the new exhaust? If so, you should swap the rims off your 93 on there as well those 18's hurt ET a lot.

I do not know when, but the '96 will be going to the track. I could take the rear drag wheels/tires from the '93 but with the big front brakes, I need at least 17s in the front. I haven't decided how to jump that hurdle yet.
