Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big one!)

Hi all, I've bee nplanning for a while to actually finish my speaker pods, since the ones I have now are a bit rough. My original plan was to put to midrange and tweet into the stock kickpanel. After careful consideration, I've thrown out that Idea for one that will look way cooler, and give me my foot room back.

It's kind of hard to desrcribe what I'm doing, hopefully I can get some pics taken soon (what I've give for a digital camera!)

My plan is to put my 6.5 inch midbass right where the trunk/fuel switches are now, the midrange above it, and the tweeter above the midrange, all following the curveof the door. All will be angled toward the driver for optimal soundstaging and clarity.

To do this is taking quite a bit of work.

Last week I rerouted my trunk and fuel door popper switches to the center console. I used an old set of door panels I had and cut out the old switches to the proper shape, and it fits perfectin the console, and takes up almost no room. I tapped into the wires right next to the drivers seat under the "tunnel" and routed them up through the console, and in a little door that was already built into the storage space.

Then I had to take out the map pockets off the doors. To do this, take the door off, and remove the little nut on the back. Also remove the carpet. It's held in on the back be staples, and on the front by glue. There is a crease at the back of the map pocket; the pocket just comes off there. Now there is enough room for the midbass, without taking up foot room.

I have all the MDF rings already made (1/2 inch MDF). Before I can finish I am waiting on my new imaging CD to arrive. After talking to several competitors, I went with the Sheffield Labs "Drive" CD.

What's left sounds easy, but I have a feeling it'll take quite a bit of time and effort. Home Depot sells Plumbers strapping aka radio backstrapping for a few bucks. It's basically a roll and thin bendable steel that will keep it;s bent shape fairly well. I will use this to position the speakers properly. Then I will sit in my car for hours, getting everything right :). Once done, I will glue dowel rods in place, securing the speakers rings. Next I will glass the area, using the space left by the old map pocket as part of the enclosre the the midbass, while retaining the stock lines. Finally the finsishing work (sanding and sanding and sanding) I haven't decided yet if I will paint the pods to match the rest of the burgandy accents in my interior, or if I will vinyl. I guess it depends on how well they turn out.

Wish me luck, Due to my wife schooling and my work, I can only work on my project on weekends, so it may take awhile. If I've been a good boy my wife may let me work all weekend and I could have it done next week.

wow, great minds think alike. i hope all goes well cuz im really interested in seeing how well this all sounds afterwards. i hear im really wasting my dyns by not having them properly set up. i cant do the kickpod thing cuz my foot goes right where it would need to be so this may be the only way.

im in the same boat, try finding a place for an 8" mid-bass in the front of that car...

Yeah, keep us updated. I've got a set of Focal Utopia three-ways that are still in the box after buying them three months ago. I was going to go with kick pods, but like everyone else, I decided I can't deal with the loss of all that foot room. Besides, my installer wanted a grand to do the pods, and I don't have the cash. That and the fact that he said I wouldn't be able to use my parking brake.

If I don't figure out something soon (like before summer's over), I might as well sell everything and forget it.

those are really sweet speakers. I thought about going with those. Have you considered putting the 4.5 inch driver in the kick pods, those are small enough that they shouldn't take up that much room. If that soenst work, with some slight modifications, they might even fit into the stock tweeter location. There would even be enough room left in there for the tweeter if you could wedge the speaker in.

thats how i have mine setup. it sounds good but with these speakers set up properly, they would sound amazing. the way ive got mine setup, i have people telling me i paid too much for speakers. i keep telling them to just wait till everything is finished.

One thought that occurred to me was to maybe have them further up under the dash, with the mid and tweeter peeking out from under it. It seems most people have the kick pod formed around the corner of the kick panels and the floor, and I'm not sure it's necessary. I don't know if my idea's possible though. One thing's for sure, I don't want them in the stock locations. It's not just the fact that they'd be blaring right at me, the real problem is that there'd be no imaging. The stock JBL speakers suck soundstage-wise. It's all left and all right. No in between. I suppose it'd be possible to play around with the angles, but I don't know.

I wonder if there's enough room for both the woofer and mid in the stock woofer space. Then I might try going with the tweeters in place of the trunk and fuel door buttons, something like DJ's doing. That's why I'm interested to hear how his thing goes. I'm not too keen on tearing up the door panels though.

I've got a few other ideas, but I should probably stop now before I completely hijack DJ's thread.

A grand for kickpods???? Most I've seen charged is a few hundred bucks, that's insane. THe supplies to make your own cost under $20.

THe 4 inch and tweet in pods is what I have, it takes up some foot room, but If I wanted I could make the pod smaller, or design it diferently to give my self more room. At the time I made them I just wanted a place to put speakers, I didn't care how they looked (obviously, lol)

THe problem with putting the speakers too deep in the foot wells or under the dash is that the high frequency sounds are easily blocked. The dash, or you legs will kill the sound from the tweets. But you're right, the stock locations are crap for imaging.

Space in the door for the 6.5 inch is tight as it is, I don't know about adding another speaker there. Plus the cutout for the speaker grill is only so big, so once again you're loosing sound. Once you start playing frequencies above 500 hz or so, you will really want to be able to angle them towards you anyways, to get a good soundstage.

The nice thing about my project is that (at least on first gens) there's really no hacking of doors needed. the map pocket just pops out with screws, and you just havbe to cut the carpet. Tape over the door while glassing (and use tin foil for extra protection) and your door will survive just fine. If you don't like it, take the tape off, screw the map pocket back in, and line the carpet up right, no one will know the difference.

thats just for the midbass right? arent u going to have to cut along the curve of the door panel for the mid and the tweet or is there something im missing?

RE: Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big o

RE: Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big o

Nope, won't need to cut for the mid or tweet either. I'm going to lay down an inital layer of glass to get a mold of the door. Then once I have the speakers aimed properly, the speakers rings will be attahced the the first layer of FG with some dowel rods. Finally cover with tshirt material and resin away. The speakers are small enough that they fit in the curve of the door. Hopefully the project will be started tommorrow, it depends on how will the wifey and baby cooperate with my plans, lol. I'll try to rememberto take lots of pics, but the only camera I have is a disposable, and they don't have the best quality....

Getting them made is the easy part, making them blend into the door panel and covering them with the right material is the tough part. I hacked up a set of door panels trying ot get it to work right wit hthe 7". I failed. They never looked right. Looked kinda like the door grew a big tumor that should not have been there. The fact that it was near impossible to covering them with a vinyl that matched and had the same grain as the door panel only accentuated the "knot" on the door. Carpet and tweed looked way out of place too. Best of luck.

So DJ where are the big wonderful pod pictures at???

RE: Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big o

RE: Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big o

As I have stated several times I have no digital camera. The pods are mostly done, the glassing part is already done. I just have to put the filler on and sand it all smooth. Due to amanda schooling first shift and me working second shift, I can only work on the pods on weekends, and my last couple weekends have been a bit hectic. I have not had a chance to touch the pods in 3 weeks. But trust me they are coming. I've got a gallong of rage filler ready to go at it this weekend barrign any other problems. (it's not a holiday this weekend is it?)

BTW, I think you may still have my torque wrench and half life cd?

Yea i think you left them here. Why do you not come down here and pick them up. Bring the whole family too.
I thought you had about 3 months of extended holiday time to work on them not so long ago. Should have been crackin on them then.

RE: Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big o

I'm afraid my weekends are pretty busy anymore with working most saturday's and a family to raise. If you could just mail them up here, I would be greatly appreciative.

I am not going to ship something 40 miles. We are having a big get togeather down at my house weekend after next. Eli, Heather, Amanda (old friend of mine), and I are going down to the track and then Racers after that. Maybe you two could come down then. You could bring Eli's Video while you are down here too. I am sure we would have a blast! Nothing is better than racing and beautiful women!

RE: Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big o

RE: Finally started my new fiberlgass project (A big o

I'm afraid we won't be able to make it. My work just got slammed with 30,000 new loans 9I work for National Ccity Mortgage now,) and we are having to work overtime, which includes saturdays.
I did happen to find Eli's movie last week after doing some spring cleaning. If you or him would give me his address I'd be more than happy to ship it 40 miles to him. I'm going to have to insist that you do the same. I'm replacing brakes hopefully this week, and badly need my stuff back.

When you guys make pods, how do you fill out the pod, to make it look more rounded? I made a set one time with a speaker ring, and stretched sweatshirt material over it and hit it with resin, but the sides were all concave and stretched inwards. I used bondo on it, but it took quite a bit to round it out, and it ended up pretty heavy. I have heard of using floral foam, what is the consensus? Putting more weight on the door seems to be a drawback of what you guys are discussing, but there are always tradeoffs.

Floral foam works nicely. Once you have it glassed, just dig out the foam. You can find large blocks at walmart for $2 bucks. I ended up not getting much work on it this weekend either. It was freakin gorgeous outside, I couldn't pass up the chance to take aryanna to the park, plus I got to go on a date with this really hot chick who claims she's my wife...:)
