Infinite Baffle

Has anyone here used an infinite baffle design in their Mark VIII? I am leaning towards this method for a pair of 15s to maximize trunk space.

RE: Infinite Baffle

where are u thinking of mounting them? i dont think 15s would fit on the rear deck. exoticlsc's 3 12s look like a tight squeeze. i think dj mentioned someone that had an IDMAX mounted IB style on the rear deck a while back.

i thought a couple 10s were good enough for u kale. second thoughts?

RE: Infinite Baffle

Yeah a couple of tens are just fine, but I took out my box and terrorized it, so now I'm contemplating what to do next. I added a larger tank for my air suspension and now I'm trying to get the most out of my trunk space because it's been getting a lot of use lately.

I figured I'd mount them facing the rear seat on a baffle that sits behind the rear seats. I figured 15s would be better for such a HUGE enclosure. It doesn't need to sound perfect, just good.

I might end up buying a pickup and building a new box for my 10s.

i was thinking about doing that with my IDMAX, but im going ported instead. It kinda wierds me out having the whole speaker just chillen there....

RE: Infinite Baffle

Well how bout a pair of tens in the rear side panels? Think that will work? Pair of 8s maybe???

Think I'll have a problem with rattles? How 'bout expandable foam? Any comments on using this stuff to seal and fix rattles?

Just remember to have to back wave completly solated from the front wave or you will have cancellation. Not all subs work well in an IB design due to the design of the suspension, you can check with the manufactor to find out for sure. THe rear deck is the obvious choice (exoticLSC looked freakin awesome!) you just have to beware of sun damage or theft.

RE: Infinite Baffle

If you're concerned about trunk space, and not so much about bass, why not go with a single speaker? My single 12" solobaric has gotten my lincoln to 133 dB, and it doesn't take up much room. It would take up even less room if speaker were mounted in the rear deck and the box hung down below it. But you don't want to run a solobaric without a box.

I personally wouldn't do a ported box, because i'd rather have sound quality than volume. A ported box is going to send some conflicting sound waves out of those ports, and is going to muddle some frequencies. An infinite baffle is trying to do the exact opposite, trying to completely isolate the front sound wave from the wave coming off the back of the speaker (since they're opposite and all). An sealed box isolates the two sound waves, but requires more power for the same volume because you have pressure changes inside the box to deal with.

Some 8 will fit back there with a lot of cutting, 10's I'm not so sure due to depth of the woofer. Expandalbe foam works ok, but rememberit REALLY expands, use too much and your quarter panel will have nice bumps in it. :) Using2-3 layers of a dynamat or rammaat type material would help too.

RE: Infinite Baffle

I put a ton of tripple expanding foam in my pearl car. All along the roofline, and i nthe back quater panels are filled with that stuff. About 4 cans of it. I never had any problems with pushing anything out of the way. All the mark VIII's with sunroofs are filled with that expanding foam evidentally.

I have seen a mark VIII with two 8" Phoenix Gold X-Max's on each side in the rear 1/4 panel. A car stereo shop owner from montreal owned it if my memory serves me right.

RE: Infinite Baffle

shoot - 1 ten or 1 twelve might just be the answer. I've been throwing long fishing poles, rakes and shovels in the trunk so it needs to have one side clear to fit diagonally.

I thought about the rear deck too, but for an IB, I don't think it would work well because I'd need to use huge speakers. They'd have to be totally out of sight too.

Anyone have any idea what the capacity of the trunk is in cubic feet?

RE: Infinite Baffle

As far as some 8" speakers go, check out the Kicker Resolution RMB8. they are only like 2.5" deep and the magnet on the back is huge. They handle 175 watts RMS each. The pair I got are going in my front doors along with the set of Kicker Resolution RS6 6.5" components. No rear speaks.
