kenwood face won't work

I've had this kenwood KRC-PS955 for over 5 years now. Today when I went ot fill up the face goes blank but there is still sound. Stupid me unplugs the whole unit to try to reset it to see if that would fix it only to find out that all my settings were gone (as usual). Well on a hunch I try the remote to find it still works. So basically I'm pissed at myself because I could've just used the remote for the time being. None of the buttons on the faceplate work so my base is so damn loud I can't here the words (I guess I'll have to go into the trunk and turn the gains all down). I'm assuming the ribbon cable going to the face plate (it rotates) is bad but I can't get the face plate apart so I can't check it. Does anyone know where I can get the service manual? I've found a lot of sites that are selling it but I just want to know how to get the face plate apart so I can test continuity from one side of the ribbon to the other.

Get this, I'm listening to the stereo this morning on the way to work and a good song comes on. I reach to the head unit by habit to turn the volume up (even though only the remote is working) and when I pushed the button everything when silent. Then I heard a couple of buzzes like the old amps used to make when they turned (the thump). A second later I notice white smoke coming from behind the face plate. I immediately grabbed the radio and ripped it out of the dash and unplugged the power to it. I noticed when I removed it that the heat sink in the rear of the unit was extremely hot (it melted the plastic the covers the antenna jack). I've never seen such a thing. Radio has been working fine for over 5 years. I wouldn't think that it would try to self destruct or instantaneously combust!
