Leaking tires

The tires om my 98 MarkVIII are only two years old with 16,000 miles on them. They are Goodyear GA's. I cannot find any nails or glass that is stuck in them. I am putting air in them (to 34 Lbs.)about every two weeks. I am thinking they must be leaking where the rubber meets the wheel and that maybe they have to be remounted with a sealer put onto the tire where it meets the rim. Any ideas??

RE: Leaking tires

Well, sometimes aluminum wheels leak air when it’s very cold outside. You should get them checked out/replaced if you have the warrantee since it’s your cheapest venue right now.

Welcome to alloy rims. Have a good tire shop demount, clean the rims and remount the tires with new valve stems. Of course you need to rebalance them as well. I need to do the same on my Mark VII. The Mark VIII wheels are doing fine.

A good tire shop will submerge your wheel and tire under water and try to find your leak

RE: Leaking tires

I had the same problem with #2 Daughter's car. She has the chrome OEM directional wheels. The leaks were at the bead, where it mated to the rim. The water dunk and high pressure in the tire will show the leak. The slight imperfections in the chrome at the bead mounting area were allowing air to escape the tire. Maybe 5-10 pounds lost per month.

The fix was to have a tire guy break the bead down and coat the bead seal and the bead wheel area with "Green Goop" tire sealer (the type used in low pressure RTV tires.)

When I first suggested it to the auto tire guy (Goodyear) he though I was smoking my socks. But I convinced him to try it. He had to do something; because these tires were under a Goodyear warranty and he'd already stated he did not know how to fix it other than replacing the wheel.

He broke the tire down after marking where the balance weights were. He gooped it up and was able to remount the tire without rebalancing. The dunk and high pressure test proved the leak was fixed. I made a believer out of him.

the tire shop i go to they go over every wheel at the bead with a wire wheel some places don't bother thats where a good tire shop is valueable

RE: Leaking tires

The rims start to break down on the rims and causes leaks do what they said have a shop remount with new valve stems, that is what i did.
